Today’s Horse Racing Tips - 17th May 2025
Racing and Sports highlight our standout plays at Australian TAB meetings for May 17.
Major metropolitan meetings are today held at Flemington, Doomben, Morphettville Parks and Belmont Park.
FLEMINGTON: RACE 7 @ 3:30 PM
Melbourne Cup ticket up for grabs. SMOKIN' ROMANS (1) is suited under this weight scale and there's no reason to jump off him. He's a G1 Turnbull Stakes winner who led at a fast clip in the Warrnambool Cup last time out and held on, giving his rivals weight on that occasion. Likely gets some give in the ground again here and can win again. ALMA RISE (18) is a nice staying mare. She was strong to and through the line in the Country Oaks at Echuca last time and gives every indication she'll relish 2800m. BERKSHIRE BREEZE (12) is racing well but is wearing thin. His best form came when up on speed but the tactics this time in haven't worked. The wide draw may see him go back again. ATHABASCAN (3) was good in the Sydney Cup last time out which is a good bit of form. He's right up to winning this.
SELECTIONS: Smokin' Romans to win.

DOOMBEN: RACE 1 @ 11:48 AM
FUKUBANA (4) has been plying his trade in tougher Sydney metropolitan contests and certainly hasn't disgraced himself. Enjoys racing at this circuit with two wins and a placing from just three spins and gets the services of gun hoop McDonald from a favourable draw. Ticks a few boxes. DEMON DARB (9) was a touch disappointing last time out but the back-to-back wins prior were full of merit. Can bounce back to form from the inside marble. VICTORY WIN (2) loves this course and distance with three wins and a second from four attempts and will be ready to peak now fourth-up from the break. Has to be considered. PIRAEUS (17) made up a stack of ground late at the latest effort and should be hitting the line with gusto once again. SHIHAB (6) has hit a purple patch of form in recent efforts and can trouble the judge again with any luck from the wide draw.
SELECTIONS: Fukubana to salute.
MORPHETTVILLE PARKS: RACE 4 @ 1:52 PM
THINKHARDANDFAST (7) returned in style at Kerang and backed it up with a solid placing at Geelong, closing strongly to the line late. Peaking now and from a favourable draw, he can settle closer and be right there when it matters. Shapes as the one to beat. BURNING BRIGHT (8) has been tackling stronger company and hasn't been disgraced. Back to a more suitable trip and grade, he has the ability to threaten late, though the wide alley might force him to do plenty of work. ANDREW'S MEMORY (6) continues to knock on the door and looks ready to put it all together. The booking of Neindorf is a positive sign. GODZILLA (2) makes his South Australian debut and brings some solid Queensland form. A good draw and market support could be telling. THERMODYNAMIC (3) is a proven fresh performer and looks well in with the claim. Keep safe. IT'SBRUCE (5) could sneak into exotics.
SELECTIONS: Thinkhardandfast to win.
BELMONT PARK: RACE 3 @ 3:16 PM
PROSPECTOR'S PICK (7) gobbled up his rivals fresh with an easy victory 28 days ago and looks a nice horse on the rise. He remains at 1000m, but draws nicely for Pike and the form out of his last start has been red hot. Can go to another level now and make it two in a row. RICHANCO (2) led and won first-up over this trip at Ascot, scoring by 1.3L in good style. He rises in weight, but he too has plenty of upside and can continue to work through the grades. Likely to be prominent in the run and can go on with the job. KEEP ITA MYSTERY (1) closed off nicely behind Richanco last start to be 1.3L off him at the finish, and meets him better at the weights this time after the claim of Gaerth. Nicely placed and can turn the tables. ANOTHER STRIKE (5) comes into this fresh but trialled nicely at Lark Hill. Can feature. SEBONACK (4) makes his WA debut today and won't be far away if he can run to his NSW form.
SELECTIONS: Prospector's Pick can go back-to-back.
