11 community heroes announced for Canberra Community Chest

The Canberra Racing Club is proud to announce the first 11 community partners for the inaugural Canberra Community Chest, to be held on Saturday, 25 November 2023.

These 11 charities, sporting clubs and community groups will each be united with an equine hero who will represent  them in the Canberra Community Chest, with the horse’s finishing position in the race to determine their organisations  share of the $50,000 community chest.

An independent committee of distinguished Canberrans were set the challenging task of determining the 11  community heroes, out of a strong list of 30 applicants.

Those unsuccessful in gaining one of the first 11 slots will now enter a people’s choice award to determine the 12th and final community partner.

The 11 partners selected by the independent selection committee are as follows:

ACT Volunteer Brigades Association
Belconnen Magpies Football Club
Canberra Hospital Foundation
Good Omen Goodeze Inc
Lifeline Canberra
Riding for the Disabled of the ACT Incorporated (Pegasus)
Roundabout Canberra
The Daniela Dwyer Foundation
The Ricky Stuart Foundation
Western District Rugby Union Football Club
Win the Day
Canberra Racing Club Chief Executive Darren Pearce is excited to support these partners who all have demonstrated  a meaningful connection to the ACT community, “The Club is ecstatic with the response to the Canberra Community  Chest.”

“I would like to say a big thank you to the 30 applicants, all of which had a compelling case to be included as a partner  of the Canberra Community Chest, I certainly didn’t’ envy the job of the independent selection committee.”

“This response received from the community indicates the strong potential for the race day to grow in years to come and it is our ultimate hope that the $50,000 chest for partners can grow to match the race prizemoney on offer.”

“We congratulate our first 11 partners and look forward to making them a huge part of a special day for our  community.”

“We are focused on being a positive force within the Canberra community and look forward to providing a wonderful  opportunity for everyone to enjoy top-class racing with purpose.”

The remaining 19 eligible applicants will now enter a people’s choice award to determine the final beneficiary, with  voting to go live from Monday, 9 October via www.thoroughbredpark.com.au.

Once the 12th partner has been determined by the community, all partners will be invited to a special Black-Tie event  prior to the race day where a representative will randomly draw their equine hero to represent them in the Canberra  Community Chest.

The Canberra Community Chest will be run as a Quality Open Handicap over 1400m worth $200,000 in addition to the $50,000 community chest.

Tickets are on sale now. Find more details at www.thoroughbredpark.com.au.
