The Melbourne Mail: Caulfield – 12th of July 2025

We head to Caulfield for this week’s Melbourne Mail.

The John Monash Stakes headlines a good card of Winter racing at Caulfield.

Playing in the double-figures space this week and sticking with Lim's Saltoro in Race 7 as the best.

His effort here last time out in a similar race was very good, doing a stack of work sitting outside Oscar's Fortune who dropped out before the corner, kicking on bravely to go down by a head to Yellow Sam.

The finishing speed shows that they went far too hard in the lead and Lim's Saltoro, for mine, was the run of the race. Meets largely the same rivals here but without Oscar's Fortune to deal with up top.

Drawn wide isn't ideal from this start point but he really should be able to get across quite easily and from there, they'll do well to catch him.

The big improver could be St Lawrence who was awful first up for the new yard but did start $6 to beat Jimmy The Bear there and has a couple of ratings that just about win this. Happy to back them both at big odds.

Plenty of value there but another one I think should be shorter is in the opener, with Teine Aulelei thrown up as a double figure hope off a strong debut win at Bendigo, which makes for good comparison.

The favourite is Signature Scent, also off a Bendigo maiden win, and Racing & Sports rated both of those wins at 90, albeit achieved very differently.

Teine Aulelei sat midfield off a strong tempo and came away late to record an adjusted time figure some 10 pounds faster than Signature Scent, who got away with a pretty cheap lead to walk in by four lengths.

I see why Signature Scent is favourite given it's Ciaron Maher & Craig Williamss in the Yulong colours vs Luke Oliver & Matt Cartwright but the price discrepancy is far too large in my opinion and Teine Aulelei represents good each-way value.
