There were only five runners in the end and not one had won a G1.
It seems that its place in the calendar could be the problem as it comes between the Saudi Cup and the Dubai World Cup which rules out a lot of potential contenders. This year's winner was British Isles on 7.0 for Baltas – Herrera with Vodka Vodka second and for the record Getaway Car was third. Favourite Just A Touch looked very good in the parade but in the race got a bad bump and that seemed to put him off balance and he didn't pick up after that.
Other results on that card saw Majestic Oops take the Azeri from Regaled and favourite Nitrogen on a sloppy track. The Beholder Mile saw Splendora win her fifth consecutive race. Bit of an upset in the San Felipe when Potente stormed through under J J Hernandez (part of a 4-timer for the jockey on his birthday). It was the Into Mischief's son's second start and he gets 50 Kentucky Derby points to be the leader of Baffert's candidates.
The Frank E Kilroe mile was another victory ride for Hernandez this time on the Sadler trained Final Boss who won by a neck from El Potente.
Over in Florida the Tampa Bay Derby went to The Puma, an Essential Quality colt under Javier Castellano who brought his horse round the field from the rear to gain the win.
