Race Preview
Sydney Specials: Randwick - 1 November, 2025
The most anticipated day on the Australian racing calendar awaits this Saturday, with Derby Day at Flemington featuring three Group One races and the $10 million Golden Eagle at Royal Randwick.
We head to the Group 3 Rosehill Gold Cup (2000m), where the Chris Waller-trained Wootton Verni comes up as our best bet on the ten race card at Randwick.
The French bred import has taken time to acclimatise, and the son of Wootton Bassett is starting to put it all together in his second Australian racing preparation.
The five-year-old gelding relished the jump in trip at his fourth run this preparation, defeating a strong lineup in the Group 3 Coongy Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.
Tomorrow, Wootton Verni takes on tough seasoned stayers, but looks to have more upside than most of his rivals who are struggling to recapture the form they displayed in earlier campaigns.
From barrier four, expect to see James McDonald park Wootton Verni in the box seat and stalk the average tempo.
Since markets went up on Wednesday, they have chipped away at Wootton Verni after opening at $3.50 and he currently sits around $2.90.
Our next best comes up in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m), with the Hawkes'-trained Briasa who can atone for his unlucky eighth in the Group 1 The Everest (1200m) at Randwick two weeks-ago.
Undefeated at this trip, expect to see Tyler Schiller park the Smart Missile gelding much closer to the speed from the good draw and prove hard to stop at the great each way price of $6.
