Super Saturday at Meydan
This is the main trials meeting for next month's Dubai World Cup
There's a 9 race card and while there are still more runners to come in from overseas there's a number of good and interesting runners already in Dubai who plan to run in this. The two Guineas races bookmark the card so here we start with the fillies in the 1000 Guineas over 1600m. There are 8 of them headed by Taifuu for Swedish trainer Soren Jensen, with Oliver Wilson riding and this daughter of Japan has got a 3/3 record. She's on 6/4 in the UK market (all prices are for UK as no betting in Dubai) and comes up against Fairy Oak who is with M Mordaad and by A'Ali and on 11/4. Barzalona rides. So far Taifuu has got the better of Fairy Oak.
We have a roughie here in Callahan on 14/1 for James Owen and Kieran Shoemark – she's by Lope y Fernandez and by no means the worst of them.
The G3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint is over 1200m with a field of 16. Rayevka has recently arrived from Francis Graffard's yard at Chantilly and reports to have travelled well. As an Aga Khan Estates runner Barzalona has the ride. 0n 7/2 in the UK. Godolphin's Symbol of Honour is on 5/1 for Appleby-Buick and the Crisfords saddle Cover Up with Ryan Moore to ride and a quote of 15/2.
The G3 Mahab Al Shimaal over 1200m on the dirt sees the return of local hero Tuz for Seemar-O'Shea on 8/11. Main threat could come from Al Nasseeb for Al Mheiri and Sylvestre de Sousa on 10/3. He's beaten most of the other runners but given the favouritism of Tuz there's some interesting prices such as 14/1 for Tuz's stablemate Mufasa with Ryan Moore on board and 16/1 for Doug Watson's Colour Up with Oisin Murphy in the irons, and then 50/1 for the Hong Kong runner Sing Dragon. He's a nice horse recently moved to Chris So and since there are so few dirt races in Hong Kong they decided to come to Dubai for a run. Karis Teetan has the ride and they should not be ruled out.
The G2 Singspiel Stakes is over 1800m and the trial for the Dubai Turf. Johnny Murtagh's Alakazi is from the Aga Khan's Estates and on 7/2 with Ben Coen on board. Holloway Boy is on 17/2 for Karl Burke and William Buick and has had 3 good runs in the peninsula so well settled and may be hard to beat. We also like Dividend, who has been racing very well since being gelded in November – trained by Dr R Newland and Jamie Insole the jockey is Rossa Ryan and 8/1 looks right.
The Al Maktoum Classic G2 is over 2000m on dirt and is a trial for the Dubai World Cup, with favouritism pretty close between Heart of Honour for the Osbornes and Mendelssohn Bay for Seemar – Mullens. Watch the betting here. Top Leader is on 6/1 for Watson-Dobbs, and Generous Tipper 15/2 for Al Jehani – J Doyle.
The G2 Dubai City of Gold is the lead up to the Sheema and is over 2400m, with 8 to run.
Rebel's Romance heads the field here as a 9 times G1 winner should and of course is odds-on for Appleby Buick. Fort George had been on the up all prep and comes into this on 15/2 for Ed Walker and Kieren Shoemark which is tempting. Our roughie here is Burdett Road for J Owen and O Murphy - down in trip from last outing in Riyadh and is on 11/1.
The G3 Burj Nahar is the prelude to the Godolphin Mile and has 11 disputing the 1600m dirt trip. Commissioner King is on 2/1 for Seemar-O'Shea. Hypnus is on 11/2 for Al Jehani and James Doyle with Telemark on 7/1 for the Crisfords – Buick. Jane Chapple-Hyam usually sends something worth watching and this time its Crown Board on 9/1 with de Sousa riding. And we have to put a little something on Mount Kosciusko on 8/1 – trained by the Argentinians Cintra and Olascoaga.
So the meeting will close with the Listed 2000 Guineas with 9 runners over 1600m. Talk of New York won impressively at Kempton on debut but that doesn't justify the 8/15 quote here. He's a Wooton Bassett and with Appleby and Buick is riding. Title Role is with the Crisfords and Ryan Moore will ride. 5/2 is about right and he's been doing well. By Too Darn Hot. Pacfic Avenue is another Appleby Godolphin on 13/2 with Barzalona on the Dubawi colt.
