Race Preview
Morphettville – Saturday, 10th of May 2025
Best bets for action-packed nine-race card on Group 1 Goodwood Day at Morphettville.
The Adelaide Carnival reaches its thrilling crescendo this Saturday, with the spotlight firmly on the sprinters. While the undercard boasts five other black-type contests, all eyes will be on the headline act: The Group 1 Goodwood.
The race took on a new dimension of intrigue the moment dual Group 1 winner Giga Kick was confirmed as a starter, enroute to his Queensland campaign. Clayton Douglas' star galloper was last seen finishing just 2.4 lengths off in the Champions Sprint, following a heart-stopping second in The Everest, narrowly edged out by Bella Nipotina.
With a swag of elite ratings to his name and recent jump-outs suggesting he's wound up and ready, the son of Scissor Kick looks poised to claim his third Group 1 crown. However, with the market already firmly on his side—and this not being his grand final—I'm looking elsewhere for my best.
Instead, my attention turns to the race prior: the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes, where I'm eager to follow up on Bridal Waltz, trained by Peter G Moody & Katherine Coleman. Though the race shapes as an open affair, the odds are all the sweeter because of it.
This progressive three-year-old filly was electric last start at Mornington, clocking sizzling time in a dominant, all-the-way victory. Rocketing to a 104 rating with Racing and Sports, the daughter of Snitzel has long shown promise but now looks ready to elevate to the next level.
While her draw may appear tricky at first glance, her tactical speed and racing versatility means she can adapt to the tempo. Map concerns are further alleviated with the booking of Jamie Melham. Holding her current form puts her right in the frame—but third-up, with natural improvement to come, she'll be mighty hard to beat.
Another I'm keen to be with is Pelevecchio in the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic. Trained by Phillip Stokes, this daughter of Castelvecchio has been crying out for a longer trip, flashing home with strong closing splits throughout her campaign. Now stretching to 2500m, she looks ready to explode.
The Lachlan Neindorf–Phillip Stokes combo has been in lethal form over the past 12 months—most recently showcased with a stunning win in the Group 1 SA Derby via Femminile. Pelevecchio profiles similarly to the Derby heroine, and I suspect her absence from last week's feature was a tactical move—Stokes already confident in his hand, choosing instead to keep this filly fresh for her own spotlight.
Say From SA
