Kuhnemann ready for bigger Heat spin role
Matthew Kuhnemann is prepared to lead Brisbane Heat’s spin attack after Mitch Swepson’s departure ahead of the new BBL season.
Matthew Kuhnemann says he is ready to take on a greater spin-bowling workload for the Brisbane Heat following the departure of Mitch Swepson.
Kuhnemann and Swepson had formed a key part of Brisbane's bowling attack in recent Big Bash League seasons.
Swepson's move to the Melbourne Stars leaves a gap, but Kuhnemann said he was comfortable adapting his role, including bowling in more demanding overs.
The 29-year-old left-arm spinner said his focus was on being flexible and contributing whenever required, rather than being concerned about specific phases of the innings.
Kuhnemann also expressed confidence in the Heat's part-time spin options, backing Nathan McSweeney, Matt Renshaw and all-rounder Hugh Weibgen to share the load when needed.
He said each could play a valuable role as Brisbane manage their bowling resources.
The Heat begin their new BBL campaign on Monday night in Geelong against the Melbourne Renegades, looking to respond after a disappointing 2024-25 season.
Kuhnemann said Brisbane's title-winning 2023-24 campaign had been built on consistency and strong performances at home, something the side is keen to rediscover in front of Gabba crowds.
A strong season could also shape Kuhnemann's international prospects, with the spinner eyeing a place in Australia's T20 World Cup squad starting in February.
Brisbane are yet to name a replacement for injured left-arm quick Spencer Johnson, who will miss the entire BBL season with a back injury.
