Warner Backs Konstas and Eyes Flexible BBL Role

David Warner says he could move down the order this BBL season to give Sydney Thunder more strategic batting options while urging young Sam Konstas to be brave and back himself.

Sydney Thunder captain David Warner has signalled he could bat lower down the order in the upcoming Big Bash League season to give his side more tactical options, rather than always opening as he has throughout his long career.

Warner said discussions were ongoing about his role, with the Thunder keen to spread left-handed batting depth through the middle order. He acknowledged that flexibility could help the team strategically, particularly if it strengthens batting balance.

Warner also backed young opener Sam Konstas to be bold and back himself as he aims to reclaim a spot in the Australian Test team.

Konstas endured a lean run earlier in the domestic season that dented his Ashes prospects, but he has since posted a Sheffield Shield century and a half-century, which Warner said showed the value of runs in gaining confidence and recognition.

He stressed that playing regular cricket and being brave in shot selection would benefit Konstas more than any amount of practice, adding that support from teammates was important to keep the youngster grounded.

Warner said it was also the team's role to help Konstas play his natural game and enjoy his cricket.

He noted that advice from others can be plentiful for young players, but ultimately individuals need to trust their instincts and approach.

Reflecting on the Thunder's loss in last season's final to the Hobart Hurricanes, Warner described the squad's performance as unexpected but admirable for the way close games were won.

He said the focus ahead of their season opener against the Hurricanes on Tuesday was not about revenge but about making a statement to the rest of the league and continually improving.
