Race 1: Mostly For Show

It was Finals Day in Adelaide and the nine-race card kicked off with a bang, courtesy of a dazzling win by Mostly For Show.

An eight-start maiden from the astute Richard & Chantelle Jolly yard, the three-year-old Vadamos colt was on the quick back-up from Wednesday after being beaten a head as favourite - a masterstroke from a masterful stable. The booking of Jake Toeroek  signalled intent, though punters weren't convinced.

He's always hinted at ability, notably placing in the G3 SA Sires' before spelling in July, but this time he put it all together in what was arguably the standout performance of the meeting. If not the most impressive, it was certainly the fastest. Mostly For Show clocked the quickest final 200m of the day, eclipsing older, more seasoned rivals across the four other 1200m contests - including the Gytrash Final, won by Chicago Storm at career peak level.

While he didn't post a new personal best, there were excuses. Held up until the final 100m, he exploded once clear, arriving just in time. That late burst suggests there's plenty more under the bonnet and gives confidence he's only scratching the surface.

Sharp enough at 1200m, he looks to have done that on sheer class. Like his sire, he shapes as one who will relish stretching out to a mile and beyond. He's a horse to follow.
