French banker of the day – 29th January 2026
Thursday’s French Banker is a Zelzal colt of strong interest on handicap debut…
Quemazal (Gianluca Bietolini / Theo Bachelot)
Deauville – R4 – Prix de Pegasus Bridge
- Promise in maiden events between seven and a half furlongs and a mile.
- Successful on his fifth career start at Pornichet three weeks ago
Quemazal will have to overcome a stiff opening mark but arrives open to plenty of further progress on his handicap debut.
Quemazal caught the eye on debut going down by a neck and although slightly disappointing when sent off favourite at Strasbourg next time out, the form has worked out nicely with three horses all in behind going on to score since.
A switch of tactics from Theo Bachelot saw the son of Zelzal get off the mark in taking style at Pornichet on his three-year-old debut, leaving the impression that there was plenty more in the tank from this upwardly mobile colt.
He could face competition for the lead from Anolante; however, he doesn't have to make his running and it's likely he'll be able to adopt a handy position from his gate in five.
Furthermore, trainer Gianluca Bietolini has kicked off 2026 with five winners from just sixteen runners to date and with that in mind, Quemazal might have what it takes to help him add to the tally.
