French banker of the day - 11th February 2026

Wednesday’s French Banker is a regally bred three-year-old who looks ready to dispense with his maiden tag.

Armano (Cristian Demuro / Jean-Claude Rouget)

Cagnes-sur-Mer – R2 – Prix de la Mer

In a race where most of the field have profiles that are very much exposed, it may pay to side with Armano, a Jean-Claude Rouget-trained colt out of Absolutly Me.

Listed-placed during a creditable career for German-based trainer Michael Figge, Armano's dam is even more notable as a producer. She is the mother of the remarkable, unbeaten dual Group 1 winner and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe hero Ace Impact, as well as Arrow Eagle, winner of the Group 1 Prix Royal-Oak. Black-type performers Alessandro and Appollo Flight also feature among her progeny.

Rouget is no stranger to sending "nice types" to the Riviera - three of the four horses mentioned above made their racecourse debuts at Cagnes-sur-Mer. His record at the venue, likewise, speaks for itself; returning six winners and five placings from 18 runners sent there over the past calendar year.

Armano runs in the colours of Mrs Waltraut Spanner, the same silks in which Arrow Eagle enjoyed much success. He shaped with plenty of promise on debut over this course and distance in January, finishing fifth in a contest restricted to newcomers. Missing the break and never really finding a smooth rhythm early, he still made eye-catching late headway from the rear - suggesting there's a good deal more to come with natural improvement.

With such a pedigree, Rouget's proven form at Cagnes, and clear promise from a disrupted debut, Armano looks a strong candidate to take a sizeable step forward and get off the mark.
