Donnache O'Brien's Atsila set to be Supplemented for Irish 1000 Guineas

Donnacha O’Brien may only be 26 years of age, but the trainer has tasted Group One success on nine occasions, including a Classic winner in the Prix de Diane in 2020 when Fancy Blue scored at Chantilly.

Following victory in the Astoria Stakes (Gr.3) at the Curragh on Sunday, Donnacha O'Brien is targeting another Classic success with Atsila (Phoenix of Spain) in the Tattersalls Irish 1,000 Guineas (Gr.1) to be run next Sunday (25th) at the same venue. She will be supplemented into the race on Tuesday.

Atsila was purchased by O'Brien for €50,000 at Book 1 of the Goffs Orby Sale and is raced by Barry Fowler. By Phoenix of Spain from Scala Romana, a two-time winner and full sister to 12-time victor Carolingian. Atsila is a half-sister to three other winners, including Layfayette (French Navy) successful in the Mooresbridge Stakes (Gr.2).

Unraced as a two-year-old, Atsila commenced her career at Bellewstown in April and followed a maiden win making it two in succession when impressively winning on Sunday.

O'Brien believes he may have underestimated Atsila: "I spoke to Barry last week about putting her in the Coronation Stakes. I talked him out of it and obviously shouldn't have.

"We could supplement for the Irish Guineas. All you can do from now is go up in class and see where her level is. She's two-from-two and she's earned a shot at a good race.

"She's lazy at home, so you don't really know you have her. We gave her a run in Bellewstown and she bolted up from a position she shouldn't have. We said we'd throw her in the deep end here and she's coped with that as well, so she's obviously a very solid filly. They went hard, there were no hiding places, she travelled well. She got a little bit tight for room as well, if she had a clear run she might have won a bit further."

O'Brien also advised Falling Snow (Justify) would miss the 1,000 Guineas but be back in the second half of the season.

The stable will be represented with Comanche Brave in the 2,000 Guineas on Saturday. He pushed Henri Matisse to finish a half-length second with the winner then progressing to an impressive win in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr.1) at Longchamp earlier in this month.
