Race 7: On Display

After catching the eye with a powerful late surge in the Group 2 Queen Of The South Stakes, On Display went right on with the job on the quick back-up — demolishing her rivals in the Listed Adelaide Guineas.

Ben Melham adopted a patient approach from a tricky middle-to-wide draw, settling well back and spotting the leaders 4.3L turning for home. With a modest early tempo, favourite backers had every reason to feel nervous as they straightened. But once Melham asked for an effort, the daughter of The Autumn Sun responded emphatically.

Angled to the outside, she swept past the field with ease at the 200m and coasted to the line, putting a touch over 2L on her nearest rival in a dominant display.

Posting a rating of 103 on the Racing and Sports scale ranks her among the finer winners of the Guineas.

While no firm plans have been announced, her recent form surge makes a Queensland campaign a tantalising possibility. Last year's winner Poifect stepped straight into the Group 2 The Roses — a path that looks tailor-made for On Display if the stable opt to push on.

Scarlet Oak won that same Roses edition with a 105 rating, and with natural progression over 2000m, On Display looks more than capable of surpassing that figure.

History tells us that horses who race on through the Queensland winter often return breathing fire in the spring. Here's hoping On Display gets her chance to shine up north.
