Race 2: Tobikko

Well fancied on debut off the back of an eye-catching jumpout win, the three-year-old son of Hellbent didn't look a winning chance until late, after being snagged back from the widest draw and swinging for home more than eight lengths off the leader. But what he produced in the straight screamed "back me next start."

Closing with some of the fastest sectionals of the day, including the quickest final 200m, Tobikko rocketed home into third, beaten just 0.6L. It was a debut full of merit, backed by a strong debut rating and a mouthwatering time figure that suggests he's well above average.

He may not have saluted first-up, but the writing is on the wall – he won't remain a maiden for long.

Race 4: Autumn Frost

Unwanted in betting at $16, Autumn Frost was very impressive when taking out the CL1 over 1300m. The four-year-old son of Frosted bounced straight to the front, carved out strong time, and kept finding in the lane to score by just under a length, leaving the favourite and second elect chasing shadows.

The merit of the win wasn't just on the clock - it was in the carnage left behind. On The Map ($12) tried to stick with him early but "blew up" badly, fading to finish 10.3L last. That tells you everything about the pressure Autumn Frost absorbed and dished out.

Both career wins have come the same way: pillar-to-post, first over 1100m and now stretching to 1300m. With his sire a multiple G1 winner over a mile and proven at 2000m+, there's every reason to think he'll get further and is one to keep an eye on.
