Breeders' Cup #46 Day 1
This meeting will be held at Del Mar over Friday and Saturday as we leave October and enter November.
Friday's card is for the 2yos with the aim of providing a good look at next year's Triple Crown fields and other future events. It starts off with the Juvenile Turf Sprint over 1000m and has the full 12 entries plus 5 reserves. It looks like being a good day for Aidan O'Brien particularly if he starts off with True Love winning this. A colt by No Nay Never he's on 7/2 with Wayne Lordan riding, Schwartenegger is one of Wesley Ward's top 2yos and will have Velazquez on board – quote vary as 5/1 in US and 11/1 in UK. There are two smart babies in Havana Anna and Cy Fair both on 6/1.
The Juvenile Fillies is over 1700m and has 9 running led by the very smart Explora, a daughter of Blame who is with Baffert and J J Hernandez rides – they are on 5/2. A stablemate that we like a lot (not just because of the name) is Bottle of Rouge (by Vino Rosso) with Mike Smith to ride and they are on 9/2. Would make a great quinella with Percy's Bar also on 9/2. And the Into Mischief filly Tommy Jo should be prominent on 7/2 for Pletcher – Velazquez.
The Juvenile Fillies' Turf is over 1600m and here O'Brien is joined by Soumillon on Precise, a Starspangledbanner filly on 6/5. Only thing not to like is the draw as she's in the car park but Soumillon is used to getting out of those tricky places. Time To Dream 5/1 Pletcher – I Ortiz is by Not This Time and the unbeaten Ultimate Love is 8/1 with Velazquez riding for Trombetta ad they are on 8/1.
The Breeders' Cup Juvenile is over 1700m and 8 go to post headed by the very smart Ted Noffey, odds on for Pletcher-Velazquez. Brant is a serious horse especially for one so young as the son of Gun Runner seems to use his brain in his races. Prat rides for Baffert and they are on 5/2. Intrepido is by Maximus Mischief with J Mullins and has Hector Berrios in the irons. He's already won at G1 level and 8/1 looks value.
The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf is over 1600m and has the full field of 18 plus 1 reserve and this is another O'Brien chance with Gstaad who has three second behind him coming in to this so is overdue the win. Again the draw isn't the best but it will be up to Soumillon to sort it out. They are on 9/5. Miguel Clement's Bottas will be ready to grasp the front should there be any sign of weakness in the favourite and he and Argos are on 6/1 with Hey Nay Never on 8/1.
