ROSEHILL January 29

Course Proper (Good 4) – 1 x 1000m (Group)

Inside Grass (Good 4 – 3 x 1030m (1 Open; 1 Maiden; 1 2 & 3YO); 7 x 900m (2 Open; 3 2YO; 2 Maiden)

The course proper trial for black type horses saw a stunning win by the talented sprinter CABALLUS.

CABALLUS (Bjorn Baker): He's been an easy to like sprinter for a long time and he may be on the verge of rising to new heights after winning the black type trial over 1000m by almost 13 lengths! He strolled to the front and was doing it easily to open up an eight lengths lead at the 600m, bearing in mind the others were distance horses (all trained by Chris Waller) starting off their preps. He cruised down the running in fast time (60.56; 34.26) that has him ready to perform in his next sprint assignment.

In the three 1030m heats on the inside grass the maiden 4YO WESTERN LANE showed the benefit of recent trials to win with authority by more than four lengths in good time (61.91; 34.80). The open heat saw the costly AMREEKIYAH work with purpose to score a strong win (62.65; 35.07) with nice work from the third placegetter SUNSHINEINMYPOCKET.

The class act RAGING FORCE made his return with an impressive third in his open heat over 900m won by IRON WILL (55.21; 35.05). He was full of running over the last 300m but was held up for a clear crack until the last 50m when he surged to the line in a strong pointer to his first-up prospects.

The fastest 900m heat was won by MISTER MARTINI (54.29; 34.61) in his first trial since his only race start last August. His progress should be monitored. HELLABELLA was another good maiden heat winner (54.88; 34.93) while the talented CELUI made another good impression working strongly to win his open heat in style (54.40; 34.21), finishing off under a soft ride over the last 200m after travelling easily behind the smart leader MAL COUPE.

Some nice work in the 2YO trials with previously noted pair COCO AFFAIR and CAMPIONE D'ITALIA confirming their ability in their heat (54.70; 34.62) and a strong second placing by LORAX in his heat (55.21; 34.99) confirming his earlier good trial form.

Course Proper (Good4) – 1 x 1000m (Group); 2 x 900m (Group)

Randwick A Grass (Good 4) – 1 x 1200m (Open); 8 x 1050m 4 Open; 1 2YO; 3 Maiden); 5 x 740m (1 Open; 2 2YO; 1 C1/Maiden; 1 Maiden)

Three black type trials on the course proper saw more easy trials from some big names as they work towards the start of their autumn campaigns.

HEAT 1 (1000m): No great pressure applied as JUST FEELIN' LUCKY led at a leisurely speed from start to finish (58.07; 33.52). The trials to impress was strong work under a hold from LINDERMANN to finish second and the top shelf filly TEMPTED working well within herself in her first trial since her Everest placing to finish fourth after covering the most ground. Craig Williams again came from Melbourne to ride SIR DELIUS in his second trial and he again came under a ride to pick up over the last 200m and find the line for third.

HEAT 2: (900m): Slowest of the two short heats (54.39; 34.71) with Golden Slipper winner MARHOONA left alone to dictate the pace. Easily held an advantage to the line from AUTUMN GLOW, who showed the benefit of her first-up trial to track the winner from the start and work home nicely for second. PERICLES covered more ground than the first pair in his first trial since the spring and looked in fine condition doing his best work through the line ahead of a nice trial from PALMETTO. CEOWULF was out for conditioning work in his first trial since he beat PERICLES at Flemington in November.

HEAT 3 (900m): Genuine pace from the start with BEIWACHT having SPRING LEE for company through the first 800m. BEIWACHT asserted himself over the last 200m (53.96; 34.30) to win the trial with APOLCALYPTIC putting in another big trial under a tight hold to finish third ahead of MANAAL and LADY SHENANDOAH having easy trials.

Impressive trials on the A Grass from some promising autumn prospects.

PROVIDENCE (Chris Waller): Stylish Wootton Basset colt rates among the best 3YO maidens of the current crop. He's classic material with his surging finish from last to finish second in his 1050m heat (62.78; 34.69) in his first trial since his fifth in the Victoria Derby a perfect start to his autumn prep.

PROFITABELLE (Bjorn Baker): Highly regarded juvenile filly took on older horses in her 1050m heat and showed her quality to sprint home fast from midfield after she was held up for a classy win (64.24; 34.88). Expect her to go on from the promise she showed when placed on debut.

The fastest 1050m heat (62.65; 33.70) will be a reliable guide. The talented NAPOLEONIC responded well to win the trial in good style from the smart mare TUILERIES

Other 1050m trials worth noting included the heat winners WOOTTON LASS (63.08; 33.84) and NAFANUA (63.32; 34.28) and promising placings by DECORUM, AERODROME and HELLDEEVA.

The Waterhouse/Bott stable would have been pleased by the debut trials of unraced 3YO fillies LADY CAPITALIST (1st) and stablemate BUBBLES UP (4th) in the fastest 740m heat (43.29; 33.05). Michael Freedman won both 2YO heats over the distance with NAADRA (44.33; 33.64) and CELESTIAL CHARM (43.87; 33.45) with both youngsters certain to benefit from the experience.
