Shadow Of Light dropping back in trip for Commonwealth challenge
Charlie Appleby’s Shadow Of Light will drop back to six furlongs when he takes on 21 rivals in Friday’s Group 1 Commonwealth Cup.
Following a top-class two-year-old campaign, which included a unique Group 1 double courtesy of victories in the Middle Park and Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, Shadow Of Light stepped up to a mile for the first time when making his reappearance in the 2000 Guineas in May.
Having travelled sweetly throughout, the son of Lope De Vega quickened up smartly to strike the front before fading in the closing stages, ultimately finishing back in third behind both Ruling Court and this week's St James's Palace Stakes hero Field Of Gold.
Connections will now drop the talented three-year-old back to six furlongs, with trainer Charlie Appleby seemingly upbeat about his chances.
Speaking on the Godolphin website, he said: "Shadow Of Light is in great order, and I'm pleased with the draw (stall 19).
"He ran a great race in the 2000 Guineas, and we are confident that the drop back to six furlongs is going to suit. I can't give any negatives and I'm hopeful he is the one to beat."
