Season of change for Georgie

As the 2024/25 season draws to a close, popular jockey Georgie Catania is setting herself up for a big start to the new racing year.

It was an unsettled year for Catania, who spent a large chunk of the season in South Australia, where she rode work and commuted to the Alice Springs races, where she had some success.

"I'm really happy to be home, even though I did ride a little bit in the Northern Territory and South Australia. It's nice to be home, and I've come back with a little bit of vengeance, I suppose, and I feel as though things are working really well," Catania said.

"I'm looking forward to a fresh start, a new season, and to be able to get some nice rides and work hard and start from there."

Catania keeps herself busy through the week, dashing from one training venue to another.

"I'm based out at Brighton; I ride work for John Blacker and then head up to help Siggy (Carr) out. Obviously, Rhonda Hall has been a great family friend, and I've had some success with her, and I venture down to Seven Mile Beach a few times a week to help out down there.

"I do try to keep it so I don't do too many days so it's not too hard on the body, but I enjoy it, and I try to take a day off when I can to relieve a bit of pressure.

"I've done it for a long time now; I find that a day or two (off) is good to freshen your mind and body."

Catania looks to have a great chance of booting home a winner from her three rides in Hobart on Sunday. The John Keys-trained Turf Puzzle will be a major player in the 1200m class 2 Hcp after a slashing first-up second.

"I jumped her out before that run and noted back to the team that she would be very competitive. I missed that ride due to a commitment for one of Siggy's horses, luckily enough, I've been able to get back on her, especially back in a class 2 and drawn really well, so hopefully she doesn't suffer second-up syndrome.

"I had a bit of a gallop on her this week and was really happy with her."

Earlier in the day, Catania has a couple of rough chances. She will ride Takeaway for Drew Tyson in race 2, and Sunrise At Kirra for Rhonda Hall in the third.

It's a big day with nine events, the first at 11:08. My best bet is Woolclasser in the second event. Beaten in a photo finish last time and should go one better, and in the last, Currencies could run a race at nice odds stretching out to 2100m.

The rail is in the six-metre position for the entire circumference.
