Ryan Moore's World Pool blog: Lockinge Stakes Day

We've had a great run of things with a lot of the Classic trials over the past week and it was great to win the French Guineas with Henri Matisse too. He's a high-quality horse and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do for the rest of the year.

Having so many trials winners ahead of Epsom is great, but they are only trials, and the horse that won the Guineas, Ruling Court, still sets the standard for the Derby.

It was good to get the ride and win a good Group 2 aboard Inisherin at York on Wednesday too. He's a very likeable horse with a good attitude. He's a big, strong slab of a horse who could improve further and run a big race at Royal Ascot.

Newbury | Race 1: G3 Aston Park Stakes

The first of my seven rides on Lockinge Day is KING'S GAMBIT. He's one of the highest-rated in the race and should be right in contention.

He had a good season last year and has already had a run in Qatar ahead of his return to British soil this term.

You'd like to think he's still got improvement in him, but he is coming up against some stiff opposition, notably Al Aasy who won impressively at Sandown on his reappearance. He's the one to beat.

Sunway and Tabletalk could take a good step forward from their first runs, while El Cordobes is a fairly solid type, so it looks competitive.

Newbury | Race 2: Listed Carnarvon Stakes

I think IDES OF MARCH sets the standard here. He's a nice strong son of Wootton Bassett who won a G3 contest last year and ran well on his reappearance at Navan a couple of weeks ago. The ground was possibly a bit too soft for him that day too.

He looks to have an obvious chance, so I'm hopeful of a big run from him.

Newbury: Race 3: London Gold Cup

This race is often a very informative handicap, and many good horses have won it over the years. GENEALOGY won at Punchestown when still very green, and then ran fifth in quite a strong renewal of the G3 Autumn Stakes at Newmarket.

He starts off on a high enough mark for what is his first start of the year, but he's a scopey horse who we'd like to think will improve as a three-year-old stepping up in trip. I think he'll run well, but it's a tough race against quite a few that already have a run under their belts this year.

Newbury | Race 4: G1 Lockinge Stakes

DANCING GEMINI impressed me as a two-year-old when winning well at Doncaster, and he's been in the deep end and run with plenty of credit in races like the Futurity Stakes, French Guineas and the Derby.

He was impressive in both of his wins this season, at Doncaster and then at Sandown, and clearly arrives here in good form.

He seems to be progressing, but he'll need to step forward again now he's taking on the likes of Rosallion and Notable Speech. Tamfana is also a danger as she's better off at the weights with Dancing Gemini this time.

Hopefully the ground will suit him. He's a strong-travelling horse with a good turn of foot and I'm looking forward to riding him.

Rosallion was a very good three-year-old, though, and Notable Speech is a Guineas winner, so we've got to take another step forward.

We know that he's fit and race-ready having already had two good runs this season, so that's a positive, but usually in these G1s all the horses that turn up, regardless of if they'd had a run, will be well-prepared.

Newbury | Race 5: Listed Fillies' Trial Stakes

ECSTATIC had a good run over a mile on her first start this year, and then I rode her Navan where she was disappointing on ground that was too holding for her.

She's let me down a few times, but I still have faith in her. She's got plenty of quality. It's hard to be confident off the back of her last run, but her best form is probably the strongest in this field.

Newbury | Race 6: The Hong Kong Jockey Club Handicap

ARAMRAM is a bit frustrating, as he's run second on his last four starts and keeps going up in the handicap. He's drawn out in two, so we'll have to see if that's an issue at all on the day, but he's a straightforward horse who always tries his best.

Elmonjed looks the one to beat off the back of his reappearance at Leicester.

Newbury | Race 8: World Pool Handicap

SOLAR ARMY remains lightly-raced and is hopefully still open to some improvement as he steps up to a mile for the first time, but I've not ridden him before, so it's hard to be confident.
