Prix du Jockey Club 2025
Chantilly is the venue for this race – the French Derby – and as in Japan has 18 3yos competing.
Favourite at this stage is Rideri, by Churchill, from the Aga Khan's Estate who is with Mikael Delzangles and Barzalona will ride. They are on 3/1. He was only fifth in the Poulaines but is considered better than that. The Irish raider Camille Pissaro with Ryan Moore riding the Wooton Bassett colt for Aidan O'Brien. He's also around 3/1 and O'Brien has suggested some limitations over the trip but that could apply to half the field.
We rather like Cualificar for this – he's a Lope de Vega and is with Andre Fabre and a Fastnet Rock dam so a bit of Aussie interest here. He's owned by Godolphin so William Buick has the ride. He's unbeaten so far this year and is on 5/1.
Bowmark is another raider from the Gosdens with Tom Marquand riding and the Kingman product is on 8/1.
While they say that an inside draw is favourable at Chantilly when the field is at full strength that doesn't always apply.
Two races preceding are interesting. The Prix du Gros-Chêne is G3 ove4r 1000m and has 10 runners. King of Blue is an odds-on favourite on 4/7 for James Fanshawe and James Doyle. We like Ponntos on 10/1 and Toyatomi a promising speedster on 12/1.
The Prix Sandringham is G2 for 3yo fillies over 1600m and Vadinska from the Aga Khan's estate is on 2/1 with Francis Graffard and Mickael Barzalona the people involved.
A raider of interest here is Betty Clover from Eve Johnnston-Haughton's yard on 6/1 with William Buick riding who looks a very honest gal, and for the locals the Lerners have Godspeed on 7/2 with Soumillon riding.
Going south to Germany and Baden-Baden in particular there's the G2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft over 2200m with a field of 10. Several of these are having their first runs for the year and Narrativo is one of these but his record is excellent and he comes in on top on 5/4 for Weiss-de Vries. Queimados is on 11/4 for Wöhler-Pedroza who won his debut last June and this is only a second start. Lordano has been good to us in the past so we will tempt the fates and take the 15/1 for Weiss and Leon Wolff. Wilko is another roughie for Grewe- T H Hansen on 14/1.
