O’Shea, Charlton keen to keep Super form going

John O’Shea and Tom Charlton are hoping their faith in emerging stallion Super Seth continues to reap rewards.

When John O'Shea first began to put a young Linebacker through his paces, he knew he had a special horse.

Fortuitously for him, the next round of yearling sales got underway before Linebacker made his debut and the Randwick trainer snapped up several more lots by his then little-known sire Super Seth.

"On the back of what we'd seen from Linebacker, before he came out and raced, we went and bought a few of them," O'Shea said.

"Then Linebacker came out a week or two after the sales.

"The stallion has got elite 'stats'. He is about eleven per cent stakes winners to runners and three per cent Group One winners to runners and that's pretty damn good."

Linebacker delivered O'Shea and his training partner Tom Charlton their second major of the season when he captured the Randwick Guineas in March.

Last Saturday, they picked up their third when another son of Super Seth, Maison Louis, raced away with the Queensland Derby.

This week, they unveiled Super Seth three-year-old Cross Tasman, a colt out of 2009 AJC Australian Oaks winner Daffodil, who made an encouraging debut on the Kensington track when fourth to the well regarded Duke Of Arrakis.

And yet another son of Super Seth will step out for them this weekend in debutant Scoop The Pool, who has been entered for the Chandon Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill and a 1300m Super Maiden at Newcastle.

The trainers are still weighing up where Scoop The Pool will run but O'Shea is adamant the youngster is worth following longer-term.

"He is a really nice horse," he said.

"I think he will end up being a Spring Champion (Stakes) horse."

Since O'Shea and Charlton officially anointed their training partnership almost 12 months ago, they have had 70 winners, eight of them at stakes level.

O'Shea is happy to claim his business partner as a lucky charm and believes the stable can continue to make a splash next season.

"It has been good so far and we've got some nice young horses coming through so that's even better," he said.
