Keep an eye on SA: Blackbookers – 14th of March 2026
Horses to follow from Morphettville Parks on Saturday.
There were no spoils at the price, helped by the main danger coming out on race morning, but Never Ordinary still lived right up to her short quote in the opener on Saturday. She dismantled her two rivals with a 4.3 length win. Only beaten a lip on debut by promising filly Rebel Tuesday, who then ran well in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes at Flemington, the Byron Cozamanis-trained filly was heavily backed at her second start and never looked like letting favourite punters down.
She bounced straight to the front, made every post a winner, and quickened sharply when asked in the run home. She rattled off the fastest closing sectionals of the day, sharper than seasoned sprinters who tackled the 1000m later in a benchmark 70.
It is hard to get a firm read on the depth of the race because she beat two debutant fillies, though both had trialled well in readiness. We have Never Ordinary rated 95 at Racing and Sports, a slight lift on her strong debut figure. If the two behind her come out and run well, which is expected, there is room to push her into the high 90s. She looks a very promising type.
The following race, won by Oak Park Maddison, shapes as a strong form race and should produce multiple winners. Full credit goes to OPM, who has progressed sharply through her grades this campaign and continues to raise the bar. Unwanted late in betting despite putting nearly nine lengths on her rivals at Port Lincoln, the Travis Doudle-trained filly bounced to settle outside the lead from a middle draw and kept finding under the light weight to hold them all off.
Kalmana was extremely brave in his narrow defeat. The Microphone filly led them up and looked gone when they quickened at the 200m but found plenty and kicked back on the inside to hold second and return a new RAS peak rating. Expect him to rise to the mile next start and be even harder to get past.
Light The Night continued his strong campaign with another honest effort. He matched his RAS peak but ultimately left himself with too much to do. He has been up since October and continues to hold his form. Warrior-like effort.
Finishing alongside him were the resuming pair Mating Call and Matahga. Both carried big weights and lacked the sharp turn of foot when the sprint went on at the 200m, but they warmed up late to get within two lengths of the winner. Both were exposed to Group racing in Victoria last campaign and look to have returned in great order, matching their RAS peaks. They will relish stepping to 1600 metres and beyond and are worth following into the carnival.
Lastly, Sicilian Princess was a dominant breakthrough winner in race three over 1400 metres and has the talent to keep progressing. She will be well found wherever she goes, so instead it is worth highlighting the three who chased her home: Jumbo Jet, Innominate and Thundara. This looks a strong form race and it would be no surprise to see all three shed their maiden tags in the coming weeks, likely only beaten if they run into each other again.
