With the Adelaide carnival on our doorstep, the search for horses we can make money on is well and truly underway. One of the clearest standouts from Saturday came in race two, where Cash from the Michael Hickmott yard went to a new level and stamped himself as a genuine carnival contender.

The four-year-old gelding has always carried a fair weight of expectation, both from punters and even more so from his trainer, who has long held him in high regard. He kicked off this preparation with a solid return at Gawler in December before heading north for the Gold Coast Magic Millions carnival. The Queensland sojourn did not go to plan, but since returning home he has rebuilt strongly and exploded on Saturday when backing up from a narrow placing the week prior.

He spaced his rivals with a four-length demolition in a win that rated well above benchmark. Cash ran to a clear new peak of 103 on the Racing and Sports scale, and the clock backed it up with a 107-time figure. He handled his BM82 rivals with ease over the mile, and Hickmott already has the City of Adelaide (1500m) on April 11 circled in red. If he holds this form, he will be winning again.

He has always shown promise, but Saturday felt like the first real glimpse of what he might become. This could be the run that launches him.

While Signature Scent was an impressive winner of a strong three-year-old BM72, she will be well found wherever she lands next. Instead, it is worth highlighting the runs of stablemates Virtual Illusion (4th) and Common Interest (6th).

The Richard & Chantelle Jolly team continue to roll out sharp juveniles, and both geldings caught the eye late after being dragged back from wide draws. Virtual Illusion had the cleaner passage and closed strongly down the outside, while Common Interest struck trouble, zigzagging through traffic before savaging the line late.

Neither threatened the winner, but both were first-up and have plenty of improvement to come. They look certain to head to the Redelva Stakes over 1100m in two weeks, where they can make their presence felt.
