Ground vital for promising Paborus

Ed Bethell has suggested that ground conditions will play a pivotal role in whether his promising four-year-old Paborus.

Bethell, who enjoyed notable success with Old Cock at York's Dante meeting, could look to the seven-furlong Prix du Palais-Royal at Longchamp, although the handler also revealed Haydock's John of Gaunt Stakes will come under consideration.

A winner of four of his six outings to date, the talented four-year-old appeared to take his form to the next level when beating James Tate's Mount Athos by two-and-a-quarter-lengths in the 1400m British EBF Michael Foster Conditions Stakes at Thirsk on his seasonal reappearance in April.

"Ground is a big thing for Paborus," said Bethell. "He's in the Prix du Palais-Royal at Longchamp and he's also in the John of Gaunt on the 31st at Haydock and basically, he'll go wherever the ground is easiest.

"We're due a lot of rain, supposedly, towards the end of this month, so the John of Gaunt could be the place for him."

The French-bred son of Recoletos has since been purchased by leading international owners Wathnan Racing.
