Dream Week for Steph Lacy!
Steph Lacy’s dream week continued at Balaklava on Wednesday when the dual-license holder trained her first winner with $600 purchase, Miss Gabbiano.
Steph Lacy, who rode a double at Port Augusta on Sunday to open her account in South Australia after relocating from interstate in 2024, rode and trained the four-year-old mare in the BM56 handicap. It was Lacy's second ever runner as a trainer, having saddled up Gerace earlier in the day to finish sixth in a 1050m maiden.
Lacy said Miss Gabbiano's win was her greatest thrill in racing.
"That would have to be the most exciting thing that's ever happened in my career, I reckon," Lacy said.
"She was an online purchase, she was only $600, so we're laughing now.
"I was told she was unrideable and she was mad, but I've ridden her every day since we bought her and she's repaid me in leaps and bounds.
"She's got a home forever now.
"To be honest, I thought the track might be a little bit soft for her today, but to her credit, she stuck to her guns and she was really strong to the line."
It's been an incredible 12 months for Lacy, who relocated with her partner, Gabe Erbes, to Murray Bridge when Erbes took up the role as the MBRC's track manager.
The pair had previously spent time within the racing communities at Ballarat, Brisbane and Toowoomba.
Lacy took time out of the saddle when she gave birth to her daughter Penelope last year before returning to race riding in February.
She said her daughter, who was trackside on Wednesday, was behind the design of her unique racing colours that were carried by both Miss Gabbiano and Gerace.
"They are my colours," she said.
'Penny actually picked out the colours, I put some of her coloured blocks in front of her and she picked up the purple one, so that's how we got these."
