Bulletproof Boy closes in on 50 wins after Melton victory
James Herbertson believes Victoria’s most popular pacer, Bulletproof Boy, will break the clock at Melton in the coming months after the rising 11-year-old took out the Beraldo Coffee Free For All on Saturday night.
Despite sitting outside the leader, Hes From Heaven, for the final lap, Bulletproof Boy ($1.90 fav) proved far too strong for his rivals in the home straight, scoring by five metres in a mile rate of 1:51.8 over 1720 metres.
Herbertson indicated the Scott Ewen-trained Bulletproof Boy is capable of challenging Lochinvar Art's track record of 1:48.6.
"If we can get a draw and lead here then he'll break 1:50 sooner rather than later and that doesn't happen very often and he's certainly one to do it," Herbertson said.
"He's always going to be there in all the races he contests, it doesn't matter what you put him in against, and whenever Scotty has thrown him in the deep end he's always swum," he said.
Ewen said Bulletproof Boy will defend his Bendigo and Ballarat Cup titles in January.
"We're going back for the Bendigo and Ballarat Cups again and with Bendigo over a mile he likes the short trip, as we've just seen," Ewen said.
"And I've said to James that I would like to take him back for the Miracle Mile heats again if we can do it, and with the way he's going why not?" he said.
Bulletproof Boy is honing in on his 50th race win as he boasts a career record of 49 wins and 52 placings for more than $800,000 in prizemoney.
