The Sunshine Coast hosts a Saturday metro meeting, highlighted by the Winx Guineas, Glasshouse Handicap, and Caloundra Cup.

Wet weather early in the week saw the track posted as a Heavy 8 at the time of writing. However, sunny days and mild temps leading up to race day should see upgrades. 

The best on the card comes in the 2400m Caloundra Cup, in the shape of the Waterhouse/Bott-trained BEAR ON THE LOOSE.

This honest stayer has been in the placings at three of his four runs this prep. Last start he tackled 2400m for the first time and looked home only to be gunned down late by Sir Lucan in the Listed Winter Cup at Rosehill. 

The engagement of Angela Jones is key. Brisbane's leading jockey in the 24/25 season rates her runners beautifully when she allows them to bowl along in front. This is the Bear's pattern, and there doesn't look to be a great deal of pressure from other quarters in the Cup so from gate one expect the import to take charge from the outset.

The stable has tasted Cup success this Brisbane Winter Carnival already with Campaldino and this fellow looks ideally placed to chalk up his first black-type win.

In the Race 6, the Guineas, BEAU DAZZLER is a nice each-way play at double-figure odds.

The Sears-trained three-year-old opened this campaign with an eye-catching third in the Queensland Guineas over the mile but has subsequently disappointed over longer trips in the Rough Habit and the Derby.

At stakes level the staying trips are beyond him at this stage, but back to 1600m he is highly competitive. 

The fact that the stable has given him a freshen up and is persevering deep into the Carnival suggests the son of Ardrossan still has something to offer. 

His best figure last prep, achieved in taking out a three-year-old quality under 60kgs, was achieved at the same stage of the campaign. Something like that figure on Saturday would be good enough to give this a mighty shake.
