Doomben - 17th May 2025

Group 1 racing returns to Doomben on Saturday with the running of the $1.5 million Doomben 10,000.

Almost $3 million in prize money awaits connections at Doomben this weekend with the running of the time-honoured Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and a stack of other Group and Listed races on the card.

We keep our powder dry, until the first, in the form of racecaller's nightmare Fukubana out of the Matthew Dunn yard.

You'd think the owners hate the lead actor of the movie Chopper but it's actually pronounced different.

This son of Dundeel ran home strongly to place in the Country Championships final before running into that winner (Know Thyself) again in a Benchmark 78 at Randwick three weeks later.

He loves Doomben with two wins and a placing from just three spins around that circuit and gets J Mac on top from a draw that maps well. Handles all going and can get our day started with an early collect.

We've landed on one at odds in the $1.5 million Group 1 Doomben 10,000 feature siding with the Tony Gollan-prepared Hidden Wealth at a 1W x 3P type ratio.

He was a touch disappointing in the Group 2 Victory Stakes last time out but is drawn much more favourably in gate two this time around and is yet to taste defeat in two efforts at this venue.  Boasts a 50% winning strikerate after 18 starts and Tommy Berry reunites after steering him to a Magic Millions QTIS victory two back.

Granted this is a tougher contest with many Sydney and Melbourne raiders crossing the border but at the current quote of $21 and $5 he looks a solid place-heavy type play.

BRISBANE BEST

Race 1 No. 4 Fukubana

Race 8 No. 11 Hidden Wealth (place heavy)
