‘It’s hard to ignore the form of that Newcastle success’ - Sam King’s daily wagers
Sam King is back with two selections on Tuesday.
With Epsom and Royal Ascot around the corner, the flat season continues to roll into top gear. There are some nice types on show in maiden company at Leicester and Lingfield on Tuesday, but the handicap action offers little to be desired.
That said, there are a couple of small wagers to be had, and it could be worth taking a chance on Sword in the seven-furlong handicap at Leicester (4.47) this afternoon.
David O'Meara has been amongst the winners in recent weeks and there are few better trainers at winning with a recruit that has been picked up from a top yard. That's exactly what he'll be looking to do with Sword, who has moved to the Upper Helmsley-based handler after having seven runs for the John and Thady Gosden team.
It took the grey son of Kingman seven goes to get off the mark when housed at Clarehaven, but he did show a fair level of ability in defeat beforehand, including when third behind two useful horses at Doncaster second time out.
He finally got off the mark when stepped up to ten furlongs at Newcastle last October, but connections clearly feel he's got enough speed given he was dropped back to seven for his reappearance at York. While he disappointed when virtually tailed off at York, it's hard to ignore that his Newcastle success has been boosted by the runner-up Cadarn, who in turn was thirteen lengths clear of the third, has won back-to-back handicaps this season and is now rated 89.
It remains to be seen whether the seven-furlong trip is really what Sword desires, but they should go a good clip here and with the application of a first-time hood applied, I'm certain he can be going very close off his current mark of 82.
1pt Win – Sword
Odds – 13/2
At Lingfield, William Haggas' Another Abbot looks ready to strike in the five-furlong handicap this evening (8.15).
A disappointing seventh of ten on his handicap debut at Yarmouth following a gelding operation, Another Abbot left that effort well behind when runner-up over this trip at Redcar eight days ago.
That form is yet to be tested but the winner was dropping in grade off the back of a good effort in Class 3 company. The William Haggas-trained Another Abbot finished with a real flourish to go down by a head on that occasion, leaving the impression that he'd be ridden more prominently next time out.
Should that be the case, then Cieren Fallon should find himself well-positioned on the son of Harry Angel from stall three, especially with the possible pace angle Ghostman drawn in stall one.
The form of his third-place finish in a novice event at Yarmouth also reads well in the context of this race, with the winner being a well-regarded type from Charlie Appleby's, while the runner-up scored at Windsor last night off a mark of 93.
A current mark of 68 should be more than workable from William Haggas' charge and he can collect this en-route to potentially running up a sequence.
1pt Win – Another Abbot
Odds – 2/1
