Group 1 Glory for Keayang Zahara and Mecarno at Vicbred Finals

A memorable highlight of APG Vicbred Super Series Finals night came from the stellar mare Keayang Zahara ($1.04 fav), who made a one-act affair of the 4YO Trotting Mares Final after taking the lead with a lap to travel.

Driver Glen Craven admitted he was given an armchair ride by the nine-times Group 1 winner.

"She got to the 300 and knew it was time to get going, but we went as steady to the line as I could because she doesn't need a hard run every race. She does it so effortlessly, it's amazing," Craven said.

The win completed a Vicbred double for Marg and Paddy Lee, who also celebrated Keayang Bazlenka's impressive victory in the 2YO Trotting Colts & Geldings Final.

The Michael Bellman-trained and driven Mecarno ($1.85 fav) announced himself as a future star of the state's trotting ranks when he chalked up the second Group 1 win of his career in the 3YO Trotting Colts & Geldings Final.

Mecarno appeared set to lower his colors around the home turn; however, under Bellman's urging, the Victoria Trotters Derby winner refused to yield and, digging deep into his reserves, surged past Enchauffour in the home straight.

"Nothing was falling into place tonight, and for him to feel like he was off the bridle at the 400 and then dig when he turned for home, he just went into another gear. He's just a freak," Bellman said.
