Diligent Harry digs deep to claim Chipchase honours
Diligent Harry showed a resolute attitude to fend off a late challenge from Annaf to claim the JenningsBet Chipchase Stakes under a fine front-running Saffie Osborne ride.
Disappointing in four outings this season, Clive Cox's charge was sent off a relatively unfancied 16/1 in a market dominated by former Group 1 winner Kind Of Blue and the Jack Channon-trained Ferrous.
Following a swift exit from the stalls, Diligent Harry and Saffie Osborne had built up a sizeable advantage and although the chasing pack began to make inroads inside the final furlong, Clive Cox's charge found more once challenged by Annaf to score by a neck.
Ferrous ran well back in third, although the 85/40 favourite Kind Of Blue, who was disappointing when missing the break at Chantilly on his reappearance, failed to land a blow under James Doyle.
Speaking on Sky Sports Racing, winning rider Saffie Osborne said: "Clive was very confident. I started going into Clive's a couple of months ago now and rode this horse work in the past couple of weeks,"
"He's a seriously classy horse and Clive was very keen on his chances today.
"He was third in a Group 1. I jumped out the stalls and Clive was keen not to wrestle and fight for cover, so from that draw, I was happy to let him slide on. He's got such a high cruising speed, and I was then able to get a breather into him.
"He's seriously tough. As soon as he felt him (Annaf) come to his girth, he just went again."
