Wootton Verni follows up in Gold Cup
Import shows his talent again in Australia
It had taken a while for the penny to drop for the Chris Waller import Wootton Verni ($2.90F), but his son of ill-fated sire Wootton Bassett has put consecutive wins together saluting in the $750,000 Group 3 Rosehill Gold Cup.
The five-year-old gelding was a dominant winner over Imperialist ($5.50) by two and a quarter lengths with Redstone Well ($19) making up steady ground on the fence a further length back in third place.
The master trainer had a few tricks up his sleeve to get the best out of the former French galloper.
"He's a really progressive horse. It has taken a while to find the winners' circle, we sent him to Melbourne to do it and we had the confidence to bring him back for this race here," Waller said.
"It's kicked into gear now and hopefully we can see him continue on in the autumn.
"I'd like to push towards maybe a Ranvet and Tancred Stakes, I think he will be better over twenty four hundred metres."
The victory brought up the second feature win on the card for hoop James McDonald, who earlier saluted on Autumn Glow in the $10 million Golden Eagle.
