Wide draw not ideal for Mr Waterville

Trainer Clayton Douglas will bite the bullet and head to Adelaide despite the poor draw for recent acquisition Mr Waterville

The Irish-bred galloper who was prepared by Chris Waller when he first came to Australia, is headed to the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Douglas is using Saturday's race as the final hit-out for the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 9.

Mr Waterville has drawn the widest gate in Saturday's line-up and Douglas said the gelding needed the outing in preparation for the Adelaide Cup.

"Drawing 19 is not ideal but he'll be in the middle to back-half of the field anyway and the 2600 (metres) should be ideal," Douglas said.

"It's a stepping stone to hopefully starting in the Adelaide Cup and he needs this grounding run to head there.

"The set-weights and penalties on Saturday makes it a suitable race."

Douglas said the only other suitable race for Mr Waterville to have run in preparing for the Adelaide Cup was the 2500m contest Berkeley Square won at Flemington last Saturday, while the Listed Torney Cup (2500m) at Pakenham is just three days prior.

At his only start for Douglas, Mr Waterville ran a closing third in Colac Cup (2000m) on February 6.

After starting his career in Ireland with Aidan O'Brien, registering two wins from seven starts, Mr Waterville went winless in 20 outings for Waller who retains an ownership share in the gelding.

Douglas said it was Waller who suggested the gelding be 'tried elsewhere' and through Rod Lyons, one of the owners of Nature Strip, Mr Waterville entered his yard.

"He's done some schooling down here and that seems to have helped," Douglas said.

"Maybe if he doesn't perform well in his next couple of flat runs, we might see him in a maiden hurdle at Warrnambool during the carnival."

Mr Waterville holds an entry in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 11.
