Watchme Win makes a brilliant return & Anthracite eyes off a feature race start.
Melbourne awaits exciting South Australian sprinter Watchme Win following a brilliant return in the Listed W H Wylie Handicap at Morphettville on the weekend.
The Andrew Gluyas -trained galloper extended his impressive record to six wins from his 13 starts with a 0.76 length win over Fancify and Aviatress in the 1100m feature race.
"We saw this as a bit of a starting point to the spring,'' Gluyas said.
"It sets the pathway now.
"It's exciting for all connections,'' he said.
Watchme Win was the first leg of a race-to-race double for Jason Holder after Darknconfidential turned things around to win the last race on the card.
Murray Bridge horseman Gary Boyce is also eyeing off a feature race start for his progressive galloper Anthracite after the five-year-old made it three wins in succession.
Boyce will target the Listed John Letts Cup at Morphettville on Melbourne Cup Day with the five-year-old, who showed versatility after finding himself in front for the first time in his four-start career before justifying his odds-on quote.
"When they're a short price, you're always expecting a result,'' Boyce said.
"It's good to see him lead and still be able to kick.
"I've wanted to see him in a dog fight for a while, because I still think he's got plenty to offer when he gets into one of those fights, so it was good to see him kick again.
"We'll probably see him in five weeks' time at a mile and then into the John Letts Cup,'' he said.
Lightly-raced filly Snow Mercy is another who could find themselves over the border as the spring progresses after following up a super debut with an impressive win, the second leg of a training double for the Stokes stable and jockey Jacob Opperman.
"We've always had a big opinion of this filly,'' Tommy Stokes said.
"To do what she did first-up was massive on one jump-out.
"She's all class and she'll go on to bigger and better things,'' he said.
