Potter's fairytale, Stead's metro comeback

While the metropolitan action was at Morphettville on Saturday it was almost 400kms away at Hawker in the Flinders Ranges where a fairytale unfolded in the career of Sophie Potter.

And it wasn't without drama, Sophie Potter losing her irons in the race before they charged away for a five-length win.

Likewise, at Morphettville, it was Andrew Stead who was the story, landing his first city success since returning to race riding aboard the Jake Stephens-trained Tropical House.

Stead, who rode his first winner in almost 12 years at Murray Bridge back in April, having overcome a rare form of cancer.

"It's been a long time,'' Stead said post-race.

Jason Holder and Connor Murtagh claimed riding honours at Morphettville with a double.

Holder partnered the Aaron Bain and Ned Taylor-trained Beach Pad to his third win from his past five starts early in the day before Bouncing Beyond was successful later in the day, one of two winners for Andrew Gluyas.

"You can kick crooked and still win,'' Holder said after he was caught deep throughout.

"That's what happened, three wide the trip, I kept him balanced and didn't panic.

"The horse did a terrific job,'' he said.

Murtagh bookended the meeting, winning the opening race on Golden Horizon for Travis Doudle before The Golden Fist claimed the last for Garret Lynch.

Murtagh followed up with another double at Penola on Sunday.

Back at Hawker, Potter's debut win was matched by a riding treble for Polly Brewster, winning the first three of the five races, while Garret Lynch's Doctor Robert claimed the Hawker Cup with Sairyn Fawke in the saddle.
