Waller and JMac chasing the long-standing Smith and-Moore record
Autumn Glow, racing's "Miss Invincible", can move trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald ever closer to one of the most enduring records in Australian racing at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
The only trainer and jockey to win more majors together are legendary duo Tommy Smith and jockey George Moore who combined for 54 Group 1 wins, establishing a national record which has stood for more than 50 years.
Sydney's all-conquering trainer and jockey, who need just one more win to bring up 500 wins together in all races, can claim another Group 1 with super mare Autumn Glow, a long odds-on favourite at $1.30 for the Verry Elleegant Stakes.
Waller, the Hall of Fame trainer, is a striving for a record-extending 12th win in the Verry Elleegant Stakes, having won the race previously with Danleigh (2011), Shoot Out (2012-13), Boban (2014), the mighty Winx (2016-19), Verry Elleegant (2021-22) and Via Sistina (2025).
Waller's wonder mare is on a record chase herself, although it would be very unlikely if Autumn Glow will match the incomparable Black Caviar's amazing undefeated record of 25 wins including 15 at Group 1 level.
But if Autumn Glow wins the Verry Elleegant Stakes as expected, she becomes only the third horse to win 10 or more races to start a career.
Apart from Black Caviar, Perth sprinter Barakey was unbeaten in his first 11 starts including the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes until he met defeat when unplaced behind Shamexpress in the 2013 Newmarket Handicap.
Shamexpress has gone on to even greater fame at stud as the sire of the world's best sprinter, Hong Kong's Ka Ying Rising, winner of his last 18 races in succession and 19 of his 21 career starts.
Autumn Glow's unbeaten streak matches that of another legendary Australian champion, Grand Flaneur, winner of his only nine starts including the 1880 Melbourne Cup.
