Unbeaten mare stakes Kosciuszko claims
Matt Dunn has continued his affinity for Highway Handicaps, producing Without Parallel for a dominant win.
Progressive country sprinter Without Parallel has ploughed through the heavy conditions at Rosehill to thump her Highway Handicap rivals, putting herself in the frame for a slot in the $2 million The Kosciuszko.
Trainer Matt Dunn confirmed earlier this week he was bringing Without Parallel to Sydney with the intention of showcasing her wares for a Kosciuszko berth and the mare didn't disappoint.
Continuing Dunn's outstanding record in Highway races, Without Parallel ($2.45 fav) ranged up to the leader on the home turn and surged clear to score by 4-3/4 lengths over Via Vegas ($18) with Cougars ($8) a half-head away third.
"I believe we have to start thinking seriously about the race now," Dunn said of The Kosciuszko.
"Horses can go from Highway races to The Kosciuszko but they need to win like that.
"I did something similar with a horse called Derry Grove. He won two Highways before running in The Kosciuszko.
"He's not unlike her in that he took a while to get going but when he found his groove he went through the grades quickly.
"I've got a bit more time up my sleeve with this horse, so I'll go home and plot a path."
Without Parallel is now unbeaten in four starts, posting a brace of wins in the NSW Northern Rivers region at her initial campaign before returning with back-to-back successes at Eagle Farm and Rosehill.
Dunn said his only reservation heading into Saturday was the heavy 10 track as the mare hadn't been tested on anything worse than a soft 6.
"The only question for me was if she was going to get through the heavy ground and she's ticked that box now," he said.
"I was hopeful she'd handle it because she's that right shape. She's a speed horse that's nimble and athletic.
"If today was a dry track I'd have expected her to do that to them. I hold her in good regard."
Without Parallel has been marked at $26 for The Kosciuszko (1200m), which will be run at The Everest meeting on October 18.
