Scholtz's Say

Trial Watch Review: 29th April 2025

Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney trials at Warwick Farm on April 29.

WARWICK FARM April 29

Inside Grass/Polytrack; Heavy 8

16 Heats – 3 x 1200m (2 Open; 1 Maiden); 3 x 799m (3 Open); 3 x 796m (3 2YO); 3 x 793m (3 2YO); 3 x 790m (3 3YO+); Polytrack 1 x 740m (Open)

Group One star PRIVATE EYE had an easy time in the heavy ground in his first trial since December.

He finished fifth in a keenly run heat over 799m won by the speedy STALLONE (47.73; 34.28). The eye catcher was the late work by LULUMON taking advantage of the better ground out wide to run home strongly for second.

Astute trainer David Pfieffer won four heats including the two open trials over 1200m with his classy pair WHINCHAT and OH DIAMOND LIL.

WHINCHAT hasn't raced for almost 14 months but he's ready to make up for his absence after a dominant win in his heat (73.60; 35.63) to back up a similar trial win when he resumed  in a Rosehill heat on April 11. He's still only a 5YO with six wins from 12 starts and I would be confident his best is still ahead of him if he avoids further setbacks.

Likewise OH DIAMOND LIL has won two trials since she won at Randwick in February for her third win in eight starts. She looked in great form cruising away to win her 1200m heat by more than six lengths in faster time (73.37; 36.13), setting her up to continue her rapid rise through the classes.

Pfieffer also won sprints heats with DON'T DOUBT MERLIN (799m – 48.29; 34.46) and CALL ME SASSY (790m – 48.49; 34.20) and should have them placed to advantage when they resume.

Bjorn Baker won three of the six 2YO heats with unraced youngsters. Mark down his sharp 796m heat winners SWORDPLAY (47.03; 34.40) and MARINERA (47.30; 34.13) as a pair he has ready to perform when they debut.

Other 2YOs to make an impression included FIREPOP, POINT SCORE, FULLALOVE, MY SHAREENA, and NIGHTSPHERE.
