The Three Hundred adds up in Winx Guineas
Jumping well and the right jockey comes together for problematic gelding.
All the pieces needed to fit neatly in place for The Three Hundred to return to the winners' list and that is what occurred when the gelding took out the Winx Guineas on Sunshine Coast's feature day of racing.
Trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott needed to find the trick to help the three-year-old break his run of outs this preparation and a combination of Angela Jones' suitable riding style and the horse jumping well from the gates all came together in the 1600-metre Group 3 feature.
Ridden by Brisbane metro premiership leader Angela Jones, who had notched two winners on the card before she begins a riding suspension tomorrow, stable representative Neil Payne praised Jones' skillset.
"She rode him beautifully and she's got really nice hands on a horse so it was a pleasure to have her on and ride a winner for the Waterhouse and Bott stable," Paine said.
"The problem with this horse is that he's a bugger at the machines. We told Ang to keep him warmed up and if he jumps to put him right into the race.
"Over the last one or two starts, he was slowly away and he gets back and starts to lose interest. I was really happy when he jumped and Ang kept pushing forward."
By I Am Invincible, The Three Hundred ($11) notched his third win in 13 starts to add to three minor placings by 1½-lengths over Ramp It Up ($31) and Apuntar ($6) 2¼-lengths away in third.
Also on the card, Fortunate Kiss ($26) had run second in the Listed Wangoom Handicap (1200m) at Warrnambool in early May and a second placing last start in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes (1300m) lead to victory this time in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) for Cranbourne trainers Lloyd Kennewell and Lucy Yeomans.
