Thespian set to test mainland Waters

One of the rising stars of Tasmanian racing, Thespian Waters, made his first step towards a race return at the Longford trials on Tuesday morning.

Stepping out in the first of 11 trials on a busy day, Thespian Waters was no match for the speedy Fear the Sting, but trainer Siggy Carr was more than satisfied with the outing.

"We know the 800m at Longford suits Fear the Sting a lot more than our fella, but we're very happy with today," said Carr.

"We didn't have blinkers, and he's recovered spot on."

Thespian Waters established himself as one of the state's premier gallopers during the 2024/25 Ladbrokes Summer Racing Festival, clinching the $50,000 Goodwood Handicap (1100m) before securing runner-up positions at Listed level in the Conquering Stakes (1400m) and Tasmanian Stakes (1600m).

The four-year-old son of Headwater and Theatre Fan hasn't raced since 27 December, with connections picking out a race at Flemington in Victoria for his first-up assignment.

"There's a 1100m race on 21 June and we're hoping he will get in with 54kg," Siggy Carr said.

"Craig Newitt is booked to ride, and he is confident he will handle the straight."

Carr is also nearing a return to the track, riding in the jumpouts following the official trials on Tuesday morning.

The popular trainer/jockey hasn't ridden since July last year due to a fall that resulted in a broken collarbone and complications with her neck.

Setback for Gemstone

While one of Tassie's best is set to head across Bass Strait, another returns without running a race.

2024 Tasmanian Newmarket winner Geegees Gemstone travelled to Melbourne last week to compete in the Listed Bel Esprit Stakes at Caulfield but was scratched on race morning.

A rough trip over and some minor mucus forced Geegees Gemstone to miss the $175,000 feature, and this Friday's $150,000 Golden Topaz at Swan Hill was a suitable back-up option.

Unfortunately, Geegees Gemstone's condition hasn't improved, and he'll return home later this week.

Along with stablemate Geegees Mistruth, the pair will now be aimed at suitable races during the early part of the Victorian Spring Carnival.
