The Melbourne Mail: Caulfield – 28th of June 2025
We head to Caulfield for this weeks’ Melbourne Mail.
While last week felt like a Spring entrée with some progressive types, Caulfield this week is proper Winter racing.
Big fields, open markets and potentially not many seeking glory outside of these months, but they pay the same and the two selections on the card will hopefully pay well.
The first of those comes up in Race 5 where Blanchland makes appeal off a nice return at Sandown over a mile, off 196 days there but finding the line very well.
The finishing speed there was very quick and a much better run than his Australian debut back in November when well beaten.
He's clearly had his issues but looks to be back on track and a RAS rating of 95 there with more to come has him firmly in the finish.
We make his peak rating 110 behind some very good horses in Europe, including a 3.5 length defeat to the globetrotting Group 1 star Rebel's Romance.
May be going off one too early but the price is there to take that leap against a very limited field.
Another at each way odds I'll play is Raikoke who I threw up fresh over this route a few weeks ago at 16-1, frustratingly missing the placings by 0.1 lengths.
He'd been jumping out well leading into this campaign and I love the mid-prep jumpout he's had with the four weeks' between runs here.
That was a strongly run race and should set him up nicely for this similar affair. Later in the day, there's a strong chance they're looking to get very wide at Caulfield especially in the 1200m chute start and I think McNeil can keep him wide on the pace and take plenty of beating from there.
The Melbourne Mail
