The Melbourne Cup Tour Heads to Gawler Barossa!

The iconic Melbourne Cup is touring Gawler and the Barossa Valley and will head to Aaron Bain Racing at Angaston Park, Kaesler Wines and the Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club on Monday, June 30.

To coincide with the Cup visit, Bain is providing a complimentary breakfast and guided tour of the famous Angaston training facility, which was home to three Melbourne Cup winners in Beldale Ball (1980), At Talaq (1986) and Jeune (1994).

"In some ways it's like bringing the Cup back home," said Aaron Bain, reflecting on the Melbourne Cup success the Hayes family had training out of the property when it was known as Lindsay Park.

"It's a significant day for us to be partnering with the Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club, where we have an on-course stable, and we're honoured to be hosting the first leg of this Melbourne Cup tour, which ends back at the Jockey Club.

"We've got a couple of surprises in store for our visitors, which marks twelve months to the day that we moved in here - Monday 1st of July last year," he said.

Numbers are strictly limited at Angaston Park and can only be booked through the Jockey Club.

From Angaston, the 18-carat gold Melbourne Cup trophy worth $850,000 will move on to Kaesler Wines in Nuriootpa for photo opportunities amongst the picturesque Kaesler vineyards. The Cellar Door will be open for tastings along with the Patisserie & Farm Shop by Cheryse Zagler, with coffee and cakes also available for purchase.

A Lexus Melbourne Cup Afternoon Tea is then planned back at the Gawler & Barossa Jockey Club to mark the occasion with a Q&A planned with a famous Melbourne Cup identity.

"This is a unique experience to get up close and personal with the Melbourne Cup trophy in Gawler and the Barossa, and re-live some of Australia's most unforgettable sporting moments," said Gawler and Barossa Jockey Club Chief Executive Nicole Arnold.

"We are throwing the doors open to the public, who are welcome to join us at the Club in the afternoon.

"There is also a dedicated tour bus departing from the Gawler Racecourse at 7.30am if you want to relax and join us for the whole day.

"The bus will take you to Aaron Bain Racing in the morning for breakfast and then onto the beautiful Kaesler Wines for wine tastings and Cup photo opportunities. Tickets are just $10 for the bus and are selling quickly, so please get in early to avoid disappointment.

"Many people also don't realise that two champion racehorses trained by Bart Cummings, which won the Melbourne Cup, have been laid to rest at the Gawler Racecourse, and there are memorials for these much-loved horses near the mounting yard.

"Galilee, which won in 1966 for Bart, lived out his days near Gawler, and Gold & Black (1977 winner) became a Clerk of the Course horse in South Australia," said Nicole.
