Sydney’s all-conquering trainer-jockey combination of Chris Waller and James McDonald need just two more wins to bring up a magical milestone of 500 wins together.

They could make Saturday's Rosehill Gardens meeting an historical moment for Sydney racing with the champion jockey riding in a number of races for the Hall of Fame trainer including boom three-year-old colt Autumn Boy in the Group 2 $400,000 Hobartville Stakes (1400m).

McDonald is also expected to ride either of Waller's two-year-olds, Hidrix or Confederation, in the Group 2 $300,000 Silver Slipper (1100m), and stablemates Lazzura in the Group 2 $300,000 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) and Travolta in the Group 3 $250,000 Parramatta Cup (1900m).

McDonald's Group 2 double on Waller's outstanding mares Autumn Glow (Apollo Stakes) and Joliestar (Expressway Stakes) at Royal Randwick last Saturday took him to 498 wins for the trainer.

No jockey has ridden as many winners for Waller as McDonald. The next best is Winx's rider Hugh Bowman with 429 wins for the trainer.

McDonald, who rode his 50th Group 1 winner for Waller on Via Sistina in the Champion Stakes last spring, told Racing And Sports that he is in awe of the trainer's work ethic and meticulous preparation.

"Chris knows his horses inside out and as many horses as he's got, he would know everything about them,'' McDonald said.

"When he speaks, you hang on every word he says. He's very knowledgeable, he's got a great eye, he can watch a horse work and basically know whether it's ready or not.

"I've never met a man who works harder, he's got a phenomenal work ethic. You would think he'd be tired, I honestly don't know how he does it – he's just a genius.''

McDonald, who will miss two city meetings this week at Warwick Farm (Wednesday) and Canterbury (Friday night) with suspension, has ridden 51 city winners for the season and has regained the Sydney jockey premiership lead, albeit with a slim three-win margin over Zac Lloyd.

But Waller has virtually secured his 16th consecutive trainer title with 98 wins for the season and goes to Warwick Farm on Wednesday poised to break the 100-win barrier for the 16th consecutive season.

Waller is also some chance of getting near his all-time Sydney record of 189 wins set in 2017-18 season.

With 49 metropolitan meetings remaining this season, if Waller can maintain his current average of 1.55 wins per meeting he will get very close to his record.

#Peter Moody and Luke Nolen have the most wins of any active Australian trainer-jockey combination.

Nolen has ridden an amazing 908 wins for Moody during their long association which is most famous for their success with the mighty Black Caviar.

#Andrew Gibbons is also closing in on the 500-win milestone for trainer Kris Lees. They have combined for 484 wins.
