Thats Not My Gait Back In The Winners Circle

Pacing bred but trotting convert Thats Not My Gait took out the opening event at Pinjarra on Monday, breaking a 14-start losing sequence, bringing up the mare’s 18th career win in 92 starts.

Bred by Young, she is by pacing stallion Follow The Stars and out of a pacing mare, Forever Happy, the last foal out of the impressive Most Happy Lady, a winner of 22 races herself from just 64 attempts.

Thats Not My Gait showed very early on that pacing would not be her thing, and with Young quickly realising that she was secretly a trotter, he threw away the hopples and with juvenile trotting events not available here in the West, he soon shipped her east where she made her debut and went on to win seven races before returning to the west.

The now seven-year-old made her debut as a two-year-old in late 2020, winning at just her second attempt in October that same year, and even went on to win three in a row for Alford in 2022 before David and Sian decided to bring their girl home in early 2023.

Young was nowhere to be seen on Monday, with Sian Hughes taking control of the stable this week, with much of the victory attributed to her winning touch, with a 35.3m margin separating the winner from second placing.

Young expects that his stable star Patched is just four weeks away from a return, after the eight-year-old head to the paddock after his last start on June 21.

Finishing fifth at Bunbury, Young made the decision to spell Patched, but his form earlier in the year was impressive, with two consecutive metropolitan wins in April and six wins in total this season so far.

"He's coming up really well. I know it's not going to be easy for him, but he deserves one more season before we retire him."

Thats Not My Gait is likely to head to Gloucester Park next Tuesday night.
