For backers of Interpretation, another win has been a long time coming.

In fact, it is 818 days since the eight-year-old last saluted in the Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) before closing off well to finish sixth in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Since then, there has been a few teasers like a second placing in the Group 2 Geelong Cup (2400m), and the latest third placing in the Listed Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on New Year's Eve.

Now it is the Group 3 Wellington Cup (3200m) at Trentham in New Zealand on Saturday that presents the gelding which his best chance of getting back into the winners' list since 2023.

Ciaron Maher's national assistant trainer Jack Turnbull admits that Interpretation is an enigma but the ability is there.

"All has been good with the preparation leading in," Ciaron Maher's national assistant trainer Jack Turnbull said.

"He galloped on Saturday morning and Luke Cartwright will be aboard."

Interpretation is at $6 on the third line of betting in all-in markets with last start Group 3 Trentham Stakes (2100m) winner Rosso the $3 favourite.

The value might be seen in the ratings as Rosso reached a career peak Racing and Sports mark of 102 at his most recent outing and the first time the five-year-old has cracked the century.

For Interpretation, we go back to the 2024 Melbourne Cup where he finished 15th to find a run rated under 100, and that was 99.

"He ran a cracker in the Bendigo Cup last year and he is the dourest stayer we would have," Turnbull added.

"He's danced every dance but unfortunately with his rating and with the type of horse he is and the age he is, and you've only got two or three races a year for him."
