Star magic set to extend to the Ladbrokes Stakes

The Star Thoroughbreds colours look set to dominate another feature race this summer with Mazzini sure to be a hot favourite for the $75,000 Ladbrokes Stakes (1200m) at weight-for-age (WFA) in Launceston on Friday night.

The well-known purple, white stars and cap have been prominent throughout the summer thanks to Mazzini, Durazzo and Sanniya.

The trio has won nine races and almost $600,000 in prize money in the past couple of months.

Durazzo has won the Newmarket Hcp, Conquering and The Inevitable Stakes. Mazzini's wins include the 3yo Trophy and Tasmanian Guineas, while Sanniya scored in last Sunday's Lady Lynette following her seven-length win in the Carpet Charge.

All three are trained by Barry Campbell, who is enjoying a super season with 28 winners at an incredible strike rate of 34%.

Mazzini will have a new rider this week with Craig Newitt replacing Kelvin Sanderson, who is sidelined after minor surgery.

Sanderson has enjoyed a successful season riding Mazzini and Durazzo in all their wins. He also won the Devonport Cup aboard Asva. The veteran hoop is hoping to be back in the saddle at the end of the month.

Newitt was in hot form last Sunday in Hobart, riding four winners, including the three feature races on the day.

"Mazzini in the Ladbroke Stakes will be something to look forward to," Newitt said.

Newitt has another impressive book of rides. He has a mount in each race, mostly on fancied runners and even picked up the ride on the highly promising Skin In The Game in the BM76 (1400m) after Anthony Darmanin was injured in a track work fall earlier this week.

Mazzini has had a freshen-up since winning the 1600m Guineas just after Christmas, and despite drawing the outside barrier (9), is the horse to beat on Friday night. The 3yo, under the WFA scale, will carry just 55kg.

So far, Mazzini has won five of his six starts; his only defeat was in the 3yo Cup when he played up badly before the start of the race.

Former star juvenile Turk Warrior will tackle the Ladbrokes Stakes second-up after his fourth in the Carpet Charge. 2024 Newmarket winner Geegees Gemstone, consistent mare Jaguar Stone, Thespian Waters and Cartoon Graveyard look to be some of the main dangers to Mazzini.

The first of eight races is scheduled for 17:53, and the feature race is set for 20:23. All the action can be seen on Tasracing Live, with Colin McNiff hosting the coverage.
