Staking Strategy: Hobart - Sunday, 22nd June 2025 (Updated)

Punters have a marathon day of racing in Hobart on Sunday, with a 10-race card beginning at 10:47.

The rail moves into the true position, which should provide fresh ground on the inside after the rail was +11m for the meeting a fortnight ago.

The weather forecast is good for this time of year, which should mean a track in the 4-5 range.

R1 Carbine Club Book Early Derby Day 2026 Maiden, 1390m

GENUINE LADY (8) has finished out of the placings at all 3 starts to date but her last run was very good and without a lot of luck in the straight. Her wide gate was a big negative and draws much better here. SOUTH GEORGIA (13) had very good backing and also caught the eye late in that same race behind Crystal Moonbeam. Extra trip is beneficial. Where she gets to in the run is the slight query. WOOLCLASSER (5) also looks well placed stepping up in distance. He got too far back here last start after being slowly away. If he can make full use of the inside barrier he's a chance. SIENA WOLF (12) consistency can't be faulted with 6 placings from her past 7 outings but is battling to break through. ORISKANY (11) put in a better showing second up off a long layoff and there'll be more improvement to come. TASSIE POWER (4) had every conceivable chance last start but he was sound through the line and the 1390m looks a plus.

Staking Strategy: Competitive race around top 4-5 in the market. Genuine Lady's beaten margin was a bit unfair here last start, extra trip suits. 2 units each-way GENUINE LADY (8)

R2 Barry Taranto Carbine Club Life Member Maiden, 1200m

RAWABI (6) is a new arrival with average mainland form but this is a very limited race and on the back of a couple of solid trial efforts he looks a good chance. TIGERS ON TOP (11) can be competitive. She was never on the track at her latest. Maps far better here. TRIBAL COUNCIL (7) is a definite market watch on debut. He's had a couple of jump-outs in Victoria but hasn't trialled locally. PUZZLE MISS (9) resumes and is a long time maiden but at least she has been placed here a few times. SOUTHERN AURORAS (17) is in the mix if he is able to secure a start. Was rock-solid in the market on debut, raced greenly and was sound, improves with that experience. STARSET CLOUDS (10) ran last in her most recent trial but she got going late and the effort wasn't too bad.

Staking Strategy: Tough race to be confident, Rawabi has trialled up nicely and should run well. 1 unit to win RAWABI (6)

R3 Ron Banks Carbine Club Life Member Class 1 Handicap, 1200m

OHSHE'STROUBLE (1) failed to fire resuming but has been back to the trials since and she might be a better horse away from the synthetic. SNOWDONIA (2) should take plenty of benefit from her first up run when just found wanting late. HUBUBBAJAHN (6) returns from a break with blinkers going back on and was successful first up last preparation at Launceston. GEEGEE STRAWBERRY (8) is capable of sharp improvement second run back. There was good support for her first up at longer odds but she failed to come on. She's 28-days between runs and was a big winner second up last time in. BUNKER BOB (5) is another one resuming and is a wider chance, missing narrowly first up last preparation.

Staking Strategy: Can make a case for several of them. Geegee Strawberry won second-up last preparation and could be the value runner. 1 unit to win GEEGEE STRAWBERRY (8)

R4 Rogerson & Birch Surveyors Class 2 Handicap, 1200m

JUST CRUISIN' (1) has his share of ability but has been off the scene for a very long time and has changed stables. Trial was good and if he is right he's entitled to start favourite in what is a tough race. SCARLETTI (2) surprised the market winning well well first up and has been kept fresh for this. THE LAST HURRAH (3) is another last start winner and has solid claims again. WEDNESDAY'S BOSS (8) gets some nice weight relief and will be rattling home late as per usual. JEHBENTI(4) has switched stables, market? BAYBOUGG (5) looked the winner last start then was nailed right on the line. NATIVE CLAN (7) was given none last start and gets blinkers for the first time.

Staking Strategy: Wednesdays Boss gets in very well after the claim, gets tempo to suit and will be hard to hold out. 2 units each-way WEDNESDAY'S BOSS (8)

R5 Brian Higgins Carbine Club Life Member 2yo Handicap, 1200m

ONLYFORAMINUTE (1) was an impressive winner at Devonport on debut in good time. Strikes a deeper race here and can measure up again, just needs to bring his good form down south. MISS LYRA (10) finished just out of the placings on debut but was doing her best work late and looks perfectly suited stepping out to the 1200m.BELLA CHINKARA (8) was rock solid first up but was no match at all for her stablemate. From a good draw will get her chance. JENNI THE CAT (9) covered ground and stayed on very well at her latest. RIGHT NIGHT (3) rounded out her first prep with a win and returns from a short break but this is harder.

Staking Strategy: Extra trip suits Miss Lyra, she was ran very well on debut. 2 units each-way MISS LYRA (10)

R6 Aintree Electrical Safety Bm64 Handicap, 2100m

Six of the 7 acceptors contested the Benchmark 66 race at this venue a fortnight back won by Golden Prophet when only 2 lengths separated them! In other words, this is a raffle. The best tactics/ride will decide. GODDESS OF ROCK (5) was disadvantaged by the lack of tempo in that race and she ran okay. PENNINE (2) returned to something like her best form and only just missed. AL MAXIMUS (3) was doing his best work late and wasn't suited by the sprint home. DOONICAN (7) will be hard to get past again if allowed to dictate terms in front. HAPPY CLAN (1) is racing well but has the 59kg to contend with. SUGOI LEGEND (4) wouldn't shock. COUP DE SPRY (6) is the outlier in the field. He's been badly out of form and it's hard to give him a push but he has had a stable change and the best version of himself would go close.

Staking Strategy: Al Maximus and Goddess Of Rock should be thereabouts, nothing would surprise in a very even contest. 1 unit to win AL MAXIMUS (3) and GODDESS OF ROCK (5)

R7 Jbm Maccas Class 2 Handicap, 1390m

SKIN IN THE GAME (1) has won his past 2 at this track and distance. He struck trouble at the start last time and did a good job to win. He's a promising horse and is the one to beat. He was soft in the market last time, doubt that will be the case this time around although he has drawn poorly. ADACHI (2) the main threat. He found the line nicely first up for his new stable and he has some good form at this track. I'M KEEFE (11) looks the other principal chance. Clear excuses last start, form prior definitely good enough, very well weighted after the claim. VALIANT KHAN (5) and CARNELIAN ROCK (6) are both in winning form but this is clearly a step up.

Staking Strategy: Skin In The Game has a bit against him today but he is a horse going places and still might be too good for them. 2 units to win SKIN IN THE GAME (1)

R8 Steeline Sheds & Garages Class 6, 1200m

ANYWAYS ROXIE (6) strung together 4 wins in a row this venue last preparation. His 2 runs at Devonport have been solid since returning from a break but this track is where he is at his best. TURK BOY (5) returns from a spell and won a good class 3 race first up last time in. He went to a new level last preparation.  ALPINE THUNDER (8) should be at peak fitness. He went a bit too hard in front here second up and was entitled to feel the pinch over the concluding stages. FURNEAUX (1) has returned in good order, not everything went right first up, made amends second up, solid each-way claims again. MAKE A DECISION (3) is a proven performer first up, runs on hard, but this is tough race to win.

Staking Strategy: Last start winner Furneaux has been kept fresh for this and maps for a good run. 1 unit each-way FURNEAUX (1)

R9 Carbine Club Handicap, 1390m

JUST A NEEDS (3) won well here 14-days ago and looked the winner a long way out. This is only slightly harder and looks tough to beat gain. VERBANO (7) the main danger. She was doing her best work late and had tempo against last start. SAILOR (6) was close up at his latest and has been kept fresh for this, dropping back in trip.  GEE GEE MISS QUITA (4) is coming along well after a long break but may need another. NICCO THE GREEK (5) needs to lift on recent efforts but best is good enough and gets significant weight relief on his past couple. WINEGLASS BAY (2) is a newcomer to the state and this trip looks well short of optimal but has trialled okay.

Staking Strategy: The race has fallen away a bit after scratchings. Just A Needs comes back in trip but there's no reason she can't go back-to-back. 1 unit to win JUST A NEEDS (3)

R10 Colin Mcniff Farewell Bm60 Handicap, 1600m

ROMANESCO FRESCO (8) relished getting out to this trip last start and if she turns up in the same form will take a power of beating. The lead looks hers again. LI'L HAIL MARY (4) was solid last start but has to find a couple of lengths to the turn the tables on Romanesco Fresco. FIORENTE DE LEGEND (6) got back and was never in the hunt in that race. Needs to lift off that effort. RICH CLAN (3) ran a much-improved race last time behind a promising horse but a poor winning strike rate is the knock. MIGHTYMAXI (5) caused an upset and brings winning form from Devonport last Sunday.

Staking Strategy: Roman Fresco is the one to beat on her last effort behind Just A Needs. Just have to ignore that the fact that she hasn't won for 19 months. 3 units to win ROMANESCO FRESCO (8)
