Staking Strategy: Devonport - Sunday, 18th May 2025 (Updated)
Devonport is the scene for thoroughbred racing this Sunday with eight races on the program.
It's another early start, with the first race scheduled for 11:47.
R1 Ladbrokes Mates Mode Pots 2yo & Upwards Maiden, 1009m
Roundle Park (7) was very good on debut here in fast time 2-weeks ago. The winner had a much softer run. He's drawn to lead again and the drop back in distance looks suitable. The only debutant in the race SIMPLY DEEP (4) is the clear and obvious threat with 3 solid trial wins leading into this. GUBER (2) was far from disgraced at Hobart last week and looks a genuine first 4 threat. PURR SEFANEE (6) next best. She's had a stable change since last start. Her new stable is in red-hot form. 7 winners from the last 11 starters. COASTAL STRIKE (1) resumes and has been placed here but this looks too tough.Staking Strategy: Roundle Park should spear straight to the front from barrier 1 and takes a power of beating in what is a moderate maiden. 6 units to win ROUNDLE PARK (7)
R2 Leigh Jordan One Agency Collins Real Estate 2yo/3yo Maiden, 1150m
The first starters should play a big part in this race. Rebel's Girl (4) trialled very nicely here behind Vixens Moon who was a winner on debut. Her trial effort was every bit as good as Vixens. REDAIR (7) also looks to have some talent. She was just a bit too good for ARCTIC ATTRACTION (6) in their trial which was the equal quickest for the morning. Artic Attraction's only run was a forgive. She looks primed to run a big race judging on her trials. CHECK YES (3) won her trial in slow time and was punched right out. CAFFY (2) stuck to her task last run at Hobart after being posted wide throughout.Staking Strategy: There looks to be three clear cut winning hopes-numbers 4,6 and7. Artic Attraction has travelled all the way from Hobart to trial here on two occasions and has done everything right in both trials. Plus, she has the race experience. 2 units to win ARCTIC ATTRACTION (6).
R3 Kevin Sharkie 2yo & Upwards Maiden, 1350m
Skelmorlie (7) was strong along the rail here over 1150m behind Vixens Moon at her first local run. That run was off a 42-day break so will only be improved off that effort. This isn't a deep race. GEEGEE AUNTY JESS (5) chances will be enhanced if she's able to lead and dictate. The 1350m should suit. She couldn't lead last start but her effort was sound. ALISENT (4) hasn't raced for around 9 months but she does bring solid mainland form. She can measure up for sure if she is ready to go. Check the betting with her. THE MOUNTAINEER (3) is in the mix. He's run a couple of handy races. He was just even at Hobart and gets blinkers off but does need to find a length or two. KING ZEUS (2) hasn't done much in Victoria but as always respect any market confidence.Staking Strategy: Skemorlie was doing her best work late here a fortnight ago, draws perfectly, and the rise in distance looks ideal. 4 units to win SKELMORLIE (7)
R4 The Stables At Spreyton 0 - 60 Rating, 1350m
Capital Cheval (1) has been in good form of late. He won one of these three starts back and has been runner-up at his past couple. The Captain Cam form-lines hold him in good stead for this. GUNSHIP (5) has turned his form around and draws for the right run again. His stablemate RING OF HONOUR (4) was well beaten by Capital Cheval at this latest but did have a bleed from one -nostril. He's seldom far away in this company. BOUNTY BAY (8) was awful at Hobart last weekend and now blinkers go on the first time. Her form prior to last start was okay. The rest of them are pretty even. Perhaps NO ACCESS (3) next best. She was strong late over 1220m at Launceston and does go well here as a rule.Staking Strategy: Capital Cheval's recent form can't be faulted and just has to produce a similar run to last start to go close again. 2 units to win CAPITAL CHEVAL (1)
R5 Seba Sheetmetal Benchmark 68 Handicap, 1350m
Spring Bean (4) is absolutely flying this time in with 2 wins from as many tries and both have been at this track & trip. Draws perfectly again. The last time MUSCLE UP (5) lined up here over the 1350m he went straight to the front and led them for a long way. Expecting similar tactics to be adopted. GEE GEE CAN WIN (7) was never in the hunt resuming but the effort was better than it seems. Has a great record around here. CHICANE (8) is rock hard fit and is suited dropping back in trip. He's failed to run the 1880m out strongly at his past couple. NICCO THE GREEK (1) was well supported but just peaked on his run first up at Hobart. Can win but the wide gate looks a tough assignment. CARNEROS (2) is usually thereabouts. He had excuses last start.Staking Strategy: Spring Bean has gone to a new level this time in and there's no reason he can't be winning again. 2 units to win SPRING BEAN (4)
R6 Goodstone Group Class 2 Handicap, 1150m
Highland Duel (1) returns from a spell and is yet to run a bad race. There's good depth to his form. He's trialled up nicely here and looks set to run well. SKY LAND (4) is another one resuming. She won her last two before heading to the paddock. Handles the synthetic without a problem. THOROS OF MYR (2) went very hard in front resuming and it was no surprise to see him pulling up with a slow recovery off a long break. May need this run as well but improvement would not shock. BERSERKER (5) wasn't far away over 1400m at Hobart last weekend. Back to this trip the query. He's unplaced from 4 tries this distance range. MARGIE (3) led all the way at big odds to win first up. She did get a very soft lead that day and the time was slow. GETCHA GROOVE ON (6) blew the start and was okay late behind Margie. BILLIE THE GREAT (7) next best but is struggling of late.Staking Strategy: Highland Duel looks the hardest to beat. There's plenty of substance to his race-day form and has trialled up like he's ready to go. 4 units to win HIGHLAND DUEL (1)
R7 I.d.i Boutique Benchmark 68 Handicap, 1150m
Geegees City Boy (2) did enough resuming and strips fitter. He has a very good record this track & trip and is a second up winner. WARICA (4) is ultra consistent and is always tough to beat dropping back to this level. PASHEONA (7) resumes from a good break and looks set to run well. She won first up last preparation and has trialled nicely. STARS IN THE NIGHT (6) won this track & trip first up and looks set for a good preparation. She hasn't won second up but has always been competitive and the lead looks hers again from Gate 1. CORNELIAN BAY (5) resumes and ticks plenty of boxes but regularly bumps into one or two better. BOLD INSTINCT (1) doesn't win out of turn either but anything resembling his best form goes close.Staking Strategy: Geegees City Boy was solid first up and will be better for it. Draws for every chance in what looks a very open race. 2 units to win GEEGEES CITY BOY (2)
R8 Tasmanian Horse Transport Class 2 Handicap, 1650m
Shy Guy (1) raced flat last start when unplaced in same grade. That was his third run in 14 days. He's had a good break since and has been kept up to the mark with a recent trial.AL MAXIMUS (4) is rock-hard fit and is flying. Dropping back in trip to the 1650m is the query with him. Has drawn for the right run though and just needs tempo to suit. STEELE MY SUNSHINE (9) battled on well behind a very smart winner last start in tougher grade. THE PRAYER (10) doesn't win out of turn but is capable on her day. MEGA MIC (2) was just a bit too good for BAYSIDE (3) in class 1 company a fortnight ago. This is a deeper race and the 1650m is an unknown for both.Staking Strategy: Shy Guy appeals here at good odds off a freshen and with blinkers going back on. The Prayer does need to find a length or two but is worth including at a price. 2 units to win SHY GUY (1). 1 unit to win THE PRAYER (10)
