Thoroughbred racing is in Hobart on Sunday for a deep nine-race card.
Thoroughbred racing is in Hobart on Sunday for a deep nine-race card.
The rail moves to +11m after being at +9m for the program a fortnight ago, and there is rain forecast for Sunday, which may impact the track rating.
The first of the day is set for 11:20.
R1 Island Coast Spirits Class 4, 1600m
Just A Needs (3) is racing well for her new stable and is close to another win. Dropping back in trip worked against her last start. Her stablemate FIORENTE DE LEGEND (6) looms as the toughest to beat. She is also racing consistently and looks well placed on the minimum. It was a decent benchmark race she contested last time. LI'L HAIL MARY (4) gets a senior rider and is the other one that has a good case. She hasn't won for a while but that's the case with the majority of her rivals. GLOBAL AWARENESS (7) was never in the hunt here last outing behind Sh'bourne Midnight but on her day is competitive. SANDUAL's (1) last win was at this venue earlier in the year over 1400m. He's yet to win at this trip.Staking Strategy: Just A Needs is in good form and is better suited getting out to the 1600m. Lil Hail Mary and Fiorente De Legend the main threats. 2 units to win JUST A NEEDS (3)
R2 Kevin Sharkie 2yo Maiden, 1100m
This is not an easy race. More than half of them are debutants Several have trialled up nicely including Daytona Diva (9). She ran quick time winning her Longford trial and was hardly tested. Shame about the wide draw. MISS LYRA (11) did nothing on the clock in her trial but her last 100m was impressive. Stablemates OUT OF WORDS (2) and ACCUSAIENT (4) also look to have their share of ability and have the home track advantage. As far as the raced brigade are concerned, there wasn't a standout amongst them. BELLA CHINKARA (7) was unplaced all 4 runs in her first prep but was far from disgraced in good company. She trialled up very well and was never out of second gear. There was nothing wrong with the debut effort of JENNI THE CAT (10) despite the beaten margin. The trio that finished ahead of her all look to be above average. ARCTIC ATTRACTION (5) and REDAIR (13) put in similar efforts behind Twice The Ice at Devonport but have doubts about the strength of that form.Staking Strategy: Daytona Diva has a wide gate to overcome but she looks a nice filly in the making on the back of her trial win. 2 units to win DAYTONA DIVA (9)
R3 Olive Tree Catering 3yo Maiden, 1200m
Another tough race. Zanzi (14) was much improved at her second start and was brave in defeat after having to do some work early. She draws much better here. ROYAL SCENE (11) switched stables and turned in a career best run here last start fresh off a break. Blinkers went on that day and she may go with it now. TASSIE POWER (6) was solid in the market on debut but failed to fire after having every chance. Clearly needs to improve off that run but gets blinkers applied for the first time and has drawn well. SOUTH GEORGIA (12) has trialled like she could be an improver this time around. OUTBUSH (15) has shown glimpses of ability. EXPOSTAR (16) has been awful both runs this time in. A tongue tie has been added. Anything close to resembling his debut run would be competitive.Staking Strategy: Zanzi finished just out of the placings last start after doing a bit of work in the early stages and has drawn better here. 1 unit to win ZANZI (14)
R4 Winning Edge Presentations Maiden, 1430m
Zurich (4) is working up to a win and the rise in trip looks beneficial. SKELMORLIE (9) had every hope as an odds-on favourite at Devonport but may appreciate getting away from the synthetic. ELLA MAY (6) wasn't far away in all of her runs in her first preparation and she looks ready to run a race resuming with 3 trials under her belt in the lead-up. ORISKANY (8) looked a good risk first up over 1200m and ran accordingly. Look for improvement now getting out to the a more suitable trip. ALL ABOUT LUNA (5) was never in contention resuming but it was on-pace dominated race and the run wasn't as bad as it looks despite being well beaten.Staking Strategy: Skelmorlie has been going okay and there might be more improvement to come, getting away from the synthetic. 1 unit to win SKELMORLIE (9)
R5 Ladbrokes Mates Mode Pots C1 Hcp, 1430m
Skin In The Game (1) made light work of his wide gate here last start leading all the way. There wasn't much chasing in behind him but he won with plenty in hand and looks a very promising type. RED FOX (6) attacked the line well last outing and looks ready for the 1400m. His only previous try this trip was a failure but it was an 'end of prep' run. OBVIOUSLY GOOD (11) was a beaten favourite at his latest and has been back to the trials. His first up run was good in a decent form race. WHISPER OF MATILDA (7) has to be respected stepping straight out of maiden grade. Not many can come from last to win in a capacity field as she did a fortnight back. PAULARTES (8) won a moderate maiden two starts ago before failing badly the following start and hasn't been seen since. Respect any market support. FIRST LINE (5) led the winner last start and was gallant in defeat but the 1400m remains a query with her.Staking Strategy: Skin In The Game impressed winning in maiden grade last start and looks awfully hard to beat. 7 units to win SKIN IN THE GAME (1)
R6 Aviso Tas Insurance Brokers Class 4, 1200m
Araya Sunshine (2) sat close to a strong speed last time and toughed it out well and was entitled to be overrun late. She's a consistent horse around here. ALPINE THUNDER (1) looked risky first up and raced accordingly. Strips fitter here and rates highly. LA VIRAGO (9) won from off the speed last time, arriving right on the line in a deceptive finish. She's usually an on-pace mare so will be interesting to see what tactics are adopted. NAVAL ANTHEM (5) got too far back last time after being hampered at the start and is in the mix. PASHEONA (7) travels down south for the first time. She battled first up but that was a strong benchmark 68 race. May need this but respect any market confidence.Staking Strategy: Alpine Thunder was found wanting late first up after sitting handy to a hot speed but this race looks a better set up for him. 2 units to win ALPINE THUNDER (1)
R7 Ladbrokes Odds Surge Bm66 Hcp, 2100m
Happy Clan (2) had the run of the race last start and proved too strong for Zulu Angel over 2400m. Rises sharply in weight for this but is the one to beat. His stablemate GODDESS OF ROCK (7) might be the main threat. She's been super consistent of late and is well-weighted versus her main rivals. GOLDEN PROPHET's (1) form can't be faulted. He continues to race well in same company. AL MAXIMUS (4) bumped into a handy horse at Devonport 7-days ago. There was a big spread of margins in that race which always bodes well as a form reference. SUGOI LEGEND (6) didn't fire at all last week. The run before was rock-solid around here.Staking Strategy: There's not a lot between the top 4 or 5 chances. Goddess Of Rock is racing well and appeals at a good each way price. 1 unit each-way GODDESS OF ROCK (7)
R8 Kevin Sharkie Maiden/class 1, 1600m
Carnelian Rock (1) was very good here on soft ground at his latest over 1200m in tougher grade. He's not proven at this trip but his fitness won't be an issue. THONATUS (3) ran well below par second-up and has been back to the trials. His best goes close. LYCO RECO (6) box seated and won a moderate maiden first up last preparation. This isn't a lot harder and draws for a similar run. RAGING WATERS (7) failed to stay last start after having every hope but will be suited back to this trip. SHAMUS EAGLE (2) gets a couple of gear changes and from a handy draw has minor claims. EMMJAY (4) was solid behind La Virago but the poor winning strike-rate is the concern.Staking Strategy: Lyco Reco returns from a break and gets a similar scenario to last preparation and has more upside than the majority of her rivals. 1 unit to win LYCO RECO (6)
R9 Ladbrokes Quick Multi Bm68 Hcp, 1430m
Verbano (5) ran a great race first up at the Warrnambool Carnival and look very well-placed in this after the claim. NICCO THE GREEK (1) had excuses on the synthetic second up and should be close peak fitness now. FLYING BILLIE (4) has been in winning form this preparation over shorter trips. He has to carry an extra 6kg here and this is a tougher race but must respect. RIGOLETTO (3) won here two starts back then got too far out of his ground last start from a bad gate. ROWING POWER (7) has his share of talent and it would not surprise to see him figure in the finish first up for his new stable. GEE GEE MISS QUITA (2) did enough resuming off a long break and look for further improvement here.Staking Strategy: Nicco The Greek was a forgive run at Devonport and looks set to peak third run in. Verbano the obvious danger coming off a big run first up on the mainland. 1 unit to win NICCO THE GREEK (1) and VERBANO (5)
